Melvins’ Buzz Osborne Says Tour With White Zombie Was His “Worst Touring Experience”
Melvins guitarist/vocalist Buzz Osborne recently shared some old war stories of touring with Nine Inch Nails and White Zombie back in the mid-90′s. The amusing anecdotes recount venue trashing with Nine Inch Nails and how touring with White Zombie was worst touring experience of his life.
The entry is part of the bands ongoing tour diary being posted over at Spin.com and can be read below:
“The only other time we ever played in Sioux Falls was in the mid ’90s when we were on tour with Nine Inch Nails. After the show, I watched the cast and crew of NIN do, oh, I’d say $30,000 worth of damage to a brand new arena dressing room. It sounds a lot crazier than it really was, and I wish I could write out the sound of shrugging. Like if you asked me, was I involved in the smashing of a brand new arena dressing room I could go, “Eh [shrug], I guess so.” I fortunately got all of that adolescent vandal behavior out of my system when I was still a teenager.
At my age, smashing the shit out of large objects just doesn’t have the appeal it did for me when I was young. Back then I used to crave destruction like it was sex. I think the only time that kind of hell-raising really works is when you’re young and stupid.
These NIN guys were all younger than me so maybe it was still a turn-on for them and the only explanation I can think of for behavior such as this is that they must have been brought up as heavily sheltered idiots with helicoptering parents who were up their ass about every minute detail of their stupid little lives during what I would imagine to be an extremely boring childhood in some middle America shit hole.
Now unfortunately, as adults, they need to smash the shit out of a wide variety of hotel and dressing rooms and do tons of drugs along the way just to forget that what they really should have done as teenagers was simply kill their overbearing parents….Be that as it may, I can still think of better ways to blow 30 grand.
This was NIN’s Downward Spiral tour, which ended up being the bands zenith, meaning it was their biggest and most interesting album along with the biggest and most semi-interesting point in their career. I honestly didn’t know much about NIN before this tour.
I mean I knew they were popular with the MTV baby rock crowd and that they had sold a lot of records but I had never actually listened to one of them. Why would I? I usually have no interest in checking out what sort of bands the baby rockers dig. This is as a result of almost always hating whatever bands the baby rockers dig.
That’s not hard to do. The baby rockers are wrong. Wrong about everything actually.
I had seen the NIN video they had out then that looked like a total burn of a Joel-Peter Witkin photo. The video was OK, I guess, and surprisingly enough the chorus to this baby rocker hit was “I want to fuck you like an animal,” which I couldn’t get my head around because the music that goes along with this “fuck-you-like-an-animal” sex boast sounds like weak, elevator music synth crap and would by no means lead you to believe the singer is capable of doing anything “like an animal.” I suppose he could get fucked like an animal, but that’s not what he’s saying.
I suppose he could be writing in the “third person,” but I ain’t buying that either.
Anyway, they were pretty good live for a band like this, but I do remember the drummer telling me that they probably couldn’t even do a live show without backing tapes running pretty much the whole show. Whatever. At least NIN and their heavy-duty arena crew were nice to us and that whole tour, despite the rock and roll posturing horseshit was a cake walk compared to the next band we did a big wheel “arena” tour with, which was White Zombie…
Easily the worst touring experience of my entire life was the White Zombie tour we did. I could write a whole book about that infernal bullshit. On the first day of the tour, the first person we met from the entire White Zombie cast and crew was a mullet headed road manager who ended up behaving like a mean version of Cotton Mather.
He was a “professional” roadie. Now I have never met a group of people who hate music more than professional roadies, and it is clearly obvious that 99.9 percent of them know nothing at all about music. Nothing. I find this to be quite strange really. It’s like someone who works in a bakery knowing nothing about baking. Actually this also extends to most of the bands these guys work for as well, but I pretty much lump all of these bands and crew into one big sewage pit. It’s fitting.
Mr. Mullet told us straight up that he was going to see to it that we got fucked over every night PA-wise in order to not piss off his boss, the swollen White Zombie dictator Rob Zombie. And it just went from there. He openly told us that Rob acted a prick to him, and that’s how life on the road was going to go for us as well.Perfect. One insane thing after another every day for the whole tour. On one of the few times we actually got a soundcheck, Mr. Mullet came on stage and pulled the plug because Rob was eating and that we were to “shut the fuck up” because he didn’t like the “noise.”
My instant thought was what the fuck is he eating, a Faberge Egg omelet? I’d been to their catering and it was the same swill they always serve at these horrid rock’n'roll extravaganzas which amounts to nothing more than disgusting macaroni and cheese type garbage and an assortment of what appears to be dead things in jelly.
You’d think he’d want some kind of booming symphonic distraction to help disguise the fact that he’s eating a big plate of steaming dog shit. Or so you would think….
And the idiocy didn’t stop there. Rob did this between song speech every night that consisted of unintelligible talking gibberish delivered in a “heavy metal” guttural grunt, and at some point he inevitably started saying “they said we couldn’t do it, they said it couldn’t be done.” Which I’m guessing is in reference to them surprisingly being able to peddle another million records to their highly gullible brainless fans. I’m not sure why he thought his dull minions needed to know this. Their entire thing was just dumb.
Don’t get me wrong, it was all our fault for doing a stupid tour like that in the first place and I certainly can’t blame them for that. We accepted the offer! Big mistake on our part but we did learn our lesson as a result of that stupidity. I think it’s a bad idea for us to try to sell our band like that.
Actually, we believed that then as well, but it was their idea to have us along and for some reason that remains a mystery to me, they paid us pretty well.
But those days are over for us. Now, I would rather eat my own shit then do another tour with people who behave like that. Actually if not my own, then who’s shit would I eat? That’s a good question….”

I love reading anything by Buzz. The guy is so candid and honest. Like when he did those 10 quick questions and destroyed the movie “Avatar”. He’s the best. And I agree, Rob Zombie is a faggot.
Actually I’m pretty sure Dale Crover wrote this
I love the melvins but god damn Buzz. Everything I ever see or hear from you is lashing out @ someone or some band. Let it go! I agree that Rob Zombie is complete garbage but I dont let it ruin my day. My opinion means shit as well as yours. Your music kickass but lets facde it, its not the greatest shit on earth. NIN fragile is better than anyting the melvins put out! My opinion and AGAIN mean shit! relax… Signed Kurt Cobain.
Let’s let everyone get it out of their system.
They obviously havent listened to “Reptile”, “Grease Paint & Monkey Brains”, or “Sanctified.”
I’m on board except for the NIN trashing. Trent has made some amazing albums, “The Fragile” and “The Slip” being two of the most underrated albums ever. Rob Zombie and Trent Reznor paid the same dues as the Melvins, played the same shitty shows and dealt with the same headlining act douchebaggery, the King sounds a wee bit bitter that he still has to play middling gigs for middling pay, non-stop since 1983.
The Melvins could have easily sold out and written more commercial material, but they stayed true to their creativity. And Osbourne has always been a bitter old fart since way back.
I always thought the Melvins were a ska band, which is why I’ve never listened to them. After reading this I’m guessing I’m wrong, haha. Is that not a ska band sounding name? I like the NiN hits, but my favorite song is the cover Johnny Cash did of Hurt. I’d like NiN more if they’d cut out the 1-2 min of feedback in the front and/or end of each song. Can’t you seem cool without the useless noise?
The Melvins are so fucking good! It’s cool to hear King Buzzo go off on bands that annoy him, even if it was 15 years ago.
That said, I do like White Zombie and some Nine Inch Nails; however, I have the majority of the Melvins’ catalog and I listen to them quite often, the Big Business guys really give them a lot of life.
Preach on Reverend Buzz!!! He is only speaking the truth brothers and sisters haha. Have never a fan of ANY of Zombie’s musical projects. I have had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Buzz a few times and he’s a good, honest, humble guy. The Melvins never were and will never be a mainstream bad, and that is fine because at least they maintain their integrity and came out an even better band after their contract with the major label expired.
This reminds me of the guys from Bullet for My Valentine. And while I don’t like their music, when they went to a Zombie roadie to re-negotiate merch prices they almost got kicked off the tour.
This was a funny read. I don’t really mind either NIN or White Zombie, but I absolutely think they are both way fucking over rated. The best songs you have heard by them are the ones everyone has heard. Beyond that they have nothing to offer IMO.
well, the best songs by NIN are the ones on the albums the fragile, year zero & the slip which didnt get the radio play. Those are my favs anyway
A decent read, though I got tired of reading the term “baby rocker” over and over. Guy seems a little condescending.
To both bands’ defense, I would make it the worst touring experience too if the Melvins opened for me. How the hell do you follow that??? Great studio stuff but awe inspiring live.
Fuck this guy. Maybe his obvious narcissistic/histrionic tendencies are to blame for his struggles with hard working and talented musicians. Little envious of the attention and success perhaps? Only a world-class douchebag publicly calls out his “peers” (NIN being peerless of course) in such a derogatory and pointless manner. You lose.
Get ‘em!
i could be out of line here, but reading this, this guy comes off sounding quite full of himself. talking down on NIN and zombie, granted rob sounds like quite the douche himself.
I wonder what brought up Sioux Falls. That town is boring as fuck. 30,000 dollars of damage sounds like it would make the venue close its doors, even though I ‘ll admit I know nothing about running a venue.
This guy seems jealous, but I would love to read his book. The only reason anyone cares about what tis guy says is because Kurt Cobain happened to live by them.
wut?
kurt cobain was younger than them, auditioned for them & failed, become their roadie… anyway later on in 1988 the melvins drummer (Crover) played on many of the recordings on Bleach & Incesticide. I actually find it more interesting that Adam Jones (TOOL) has become a casual member of the Melvins & has had numerous guest guitar performances on a few of their albums, also live shows too.
Yeah, they’ve been friends for a long time. I saw the Melvins open for Tool back in the day. Buzzo came out for stinkfist and stuck around to make a Nugent song sound good. I’ve loved the Melvins ever since. It’s was easily one of my favorite shows ever and luckily for me, the entire thing was recorded at the soundboard.

Oh geez, that was my first ever concert. White Zombie/The Melvins/Reverend Horton Heat in Fort Wayne, IN (1995). I was 15 and thought The Melvins sucked and White Zombie was amazing. Now I couldn’t care less about Zombie’s music and recently saw The Melvins again for like the 6th time. It’s crazy how things change.
exactly my experience with soil
King Buzzo is the man.
The NIN story doesn’t surprise me: I saw them on tour with Bowie and Trent would play a keyboard for 2 minutes then kick the shit out of it and throw it across the stage, then grab a guitar and proceed to do the same thing. Now I have seen bands that have sound problems get pissed at the equipment, but Trent has 3 or 4 people dedicated to scurrying across the stage, pick up the instrument, do a quick repair and place it in position again, so he could come over “play” it for a few minutes and then hurl it on the ground. I soon realized it was all part of the act (wow, look how angry he is!) and it got old real quick. Just play the fucking song dude, but no, the music is prerecorded so he can stomp around stage like an angry child.
I have seen them since and they dropped the act, but I can see where a working musicians like Buzz would also be put off by their early shows.
The Melvins are better than any of you will ever be. Go see them live and bask in their glory.
I ran into Buzz in Dallas at the grassy knoll where Kennedy got his head blown off. My friend and I were like, “Oh cool, check it out, that’s Buzz over there, let’s go say what’s up”. So we go over there and he was just being a dick the whole time and told us anyone who believes Oswald didn’t shoot Kennedy is a fucking idiot.
King Buzzo is a professional asshole and that is why I love him and the Melvins. Case in point:

Of course Oswald shot Kennedy. He had the magic bullet! Can’t stop magic, duh.
I’m pretty sure that Buzz has heard the Bill Hicks version of the assassination.
Rob Zombie probably was a major asshole back then, but I would imagine that he’d have changed his ways by now. He makes awesome movies, sure, he is full of himself, that’s not always a bad thing. But, IMO the Melvins are way better than Rob Zombie anyday.
The irony is he’s getting paid for this.
