Slipknot’s Corey Taylor On The State Of The Music Industry “It’s More Of A Fucking Factory At This Point”
Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor recently provided some commentary for an op-ed piece over at Bloody-disgusting.com. The piece centers around a perceived lack of rebellion in the music of today and how it’s impacting the younger generation.
Sharing some insight on the current state of the music industry, Taylor stated:
“It’s more of a fucking factory at this point. They keep cranking out these mediocre fuck heads , shoving them into the studio for ten seconds and then they basically autocorrect everything. I think this generation that’s growing up really enjoying this pop music is gonna be the same as the people who grew up really liking Rick Astley. It’s passing fancy, as far as music goes.”
Speaking on the impact the processed music may have on today’s generation of musicians, Taylor offered:
“I think you’re always gonna have half the generation that’s lazy. But I think it makes the other half work that much harder… I think because technology is so badly ruining music, it just breeds a generation that’s going to be completely 180 from that. I think we’re gonna have a lot more home grown rock n roll coming out soon. I’m hoping.”

The Music industry is in the shitter? I totally didn’t know 6 years ago…
You were 11. All you knew was Pokemon and Spongebob.
151 or GTFO
It’s like Phil Labonte from ATR. I really liked the Fall of Ideals album and thought he had a nice singing voice that complemented the screaming, but after seeing numerous videos of him live, it’s clear that he can’t actually sing like that. It has pretty much ruined the band for me, along with the generic-sounding music they crank out these days. I feel bad for anyone that didn’t know that before going to see them live over the past couple years. I’m pretty sure some major disappointment set in at some point during the show.
no kidding. his voice is a joke live.
Saw ATR live in Jacksonville, FL back on 2005 or 2006 with Chimaira, 3 Inches of Blood and Six Feet Under.
ATR and 6 feet under both sucked. 3 inches of blood was good and Chimaira fucking killed it.
I’m from the metal “hotbed” that is Western Mass that produced Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and The Acacia Strain, and spent a lot of time going to shows in the late 90s/early 2000s. I was stunned when ATR broke for SO many reasons, one of which was the “Phil can’t sing to save his life” aspect. Oh, studios.
I actually think Taylor’s clean voice is as strong as ever. He just doesn’t have that balls out scream he used to have anymore. Or he does in very short spurts before his voice gives out again.
I was talking about Labonte. Taylor is a solid singer.
Metal musicians have been telling us this for years, “Home Grown Rock N Roll” is doing fine last time I checked, Slipknot last album reached number 1 on the billboard, a lot of artists on MTV even tho getting mainstream recognition don’t get their album to nm.1, Maroon 5′s new album peaked at number 2 and dropped to 5 this week…
I think of Home Grown Rock N Roll more as The Black Keys, Taddy Porter, and Band of Skulls, myself.
exactly. maroon 5′s journey into fame has turned them into something very unlike home-grown rock rocknroll.
I don’t like Corey Taylor.
>>But he’s right.
How can you not like Corey Taylor? The guy IS music. He nailed it on the above mentioned statement.
1. Stone Sour
2. Those god awful rants he does during his live performance
3. that video of him making dubstep with like a fucking fireman’s hat on.
Do I need to continue?
Yup, please continue. I defy you to list 7 more reasons you dislike Corey Taylor.
4. The Junkyard Gang Band
5. He’s holding up the new Slipknot record.
6. He’s a ginger
7. He told everyone he was joining Velvet Revolver and that never happened
8. He’s a prima donna at times
9. He tried to replicate Jon Davis’ crying at the end of the self titled album.
10. He had the audacity to say the new Stone Sour was going to be some Pink Floyd “The Wall” meets Alice In Chains “Dirt” with some Led Zepp thrown in..get the fuck outta here.
Some of it was a stretch but there is 7 more reasons I dislike Corey Taylor
11. Solo Tour
12. Gets mad when told to put his mask back on (he should)
13. He contributed to Rollerball
14. He’s Polish
15. He attempted to jump off an 8th floor balcony and didn’t
16. He reproduced twice
17. and last but not least, he JUMPEDDAFUCKUP
Okay okay, so you guys aren’t Corey Taylor fans. Point well taken.
Not a big slipknot or Corey Taylor fan, but he is right with this statment. New, original bands these days are nearly impossible to find. Probably the reason we all come to theprp hoping that wook(or another member) will introduce us all to something mind blowing!
Corey is the truth!!
“I think because technology is so badly ruining music, it just breeds a generation that’s going to be completely 180 from that.”
Technology is not going away in music……ever! So instead of bitchen about it like a little girl, find ways to inspire people to not go in a direction where they will fall into that void of mediocrity.
If I filtered your post through autotune, it might not sound so stupid.
Right? He said “bitchen” get the fuck outtttta here.
He didn’t say technology was going away or that he expected it to. In fact, he’s saying the overuse of technology is what will drive people to in a more raw, natural direction, which I think is what you were bitching at him to do.
I’d be willing to take Corey’s opinion a little more seriously if the last Stone Sour CD wasn’t so watered down and bland.
I bet Sunflower Dead feels different about that lol.
While I absolutely identify myself as a metalhead, I’m finding more going on in indie rock and “alt” country that’s exciting lately.
It’s not just music but every form of mass media is afraid to try something new and it’s getting worse. Just look at video games; movies, fuck even television shows are awful. We have Call of Duty 9?, Batman 7 I think we’re on, and how many fucking CSI versions are there, it’s completely insane. But everyone is so used to it, people are afraid to try new ideas. Guess why everyone, IF A NEW IDEA IS A FAILURE A LOT OF PEOPLE LOSE MONEY! Independent organizations keep all of these forms of media alive with originality. Anyway I’m sure pretty much all you dudes know this since you frequent this site.
The hilarious thing is about All That Remains is “The Fall of Ideals” was actually their best selling album, yet each release has more clean vocals, more vocal effects, and more overproduced bullshit. How does that even make any sense? That my friends is how stupid Phiil Labonte is.
Really what I’m hoping is that this means Stone Sour and Slipknot are actually going to follow suit with Cory’s words. Maybe Cory realized how shitty the last Stone Sour album was.
Judging from the two new tracks they released, seems like we’ll be getting another Come What(ever) May, which I’m totally cool with. Not as heavy as as their first but at least it had some damn fine hard rock tunes on it.
Come What(ever) May was a badass “rock” album. I love that cd. I think I’ll give it a listen right now as a matter of fact.
I can’t get into anything after the first Stone Sour album and the first two Slipknot albums. I liked Cory much better before he blew out his throat pussy.
Hate all you want on Stone Sour/Slipknot. Corey Taylor is the real deal as a frontman/musician.
I’m sure that neither of Corey Taylor’s bands use any of that technology. I’m sure that none of the drums were beat detected or sample blended, nothing was time stretched, nothing was tuned, there were no electronic elements in the music, and all of it was recorded straight to tape.
Give me a break.
he thoughts on music are true, but his “output” lately has been weak. I would hope that shit talkers put out strong records before they bash on others. Stone Sour have always sucked dick (bring it haters!) and Slipknot get weaker every release.
that said, the issue is only half technology. the other is that record labels don’t look for the next (insert band beatles, led zep, acdc, etc.) big group anymore. they sign everything and drop what does not sell. back in the day, they gave a bands 3 or 4 records to find a sound, audience, etc. now, you sell or die. sad! and kids today call emmure and sky eats airplane (etc) metal. but yes.. kids, learn to PLAY or SING before you torture us with your shit!
or just sell it to Allichs, he’ll buy anything!
