Chino Moreno Talks New Deftones Album, Palms & More
@deftonesband Deftones, etc. frontman Chino Moreno recently spoke to Billboard.com about the bands forthcoming new album and more. Speaking on their next studio album, which they are currently mixing, he stated:
“It’s not a super fast or slow record. It’s very dynamic. Some of my favorite things about Deftones are the dynamics. Yes, we’re a heavy band, but we’re not just in-your-face aggro the whole time, punching you in the face.
There’s a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there’s also this very soothing element where there’s a lot of soundscapes rather than attack, attack, attack the whole time. I understand that’s a big part of our sound, but I really feel like we reached a peak on our dynamics on this record with those two qualities — the beauty of something and just straight, ruthless aggression.”
The as-yet untitled effort is tentatively on course for an October 09th release date. Meanwhile, Moreno has revealed he is helping out Team Sleep‘s Todd Wilkinson on a new solo album. He will also soon begin tracking vocals for the six song debut EP from Palms. That group of course three former members of Isis.
On that front Moreno offered: “The music’s all been recorded and everything, and obviously I’ve been engulfed in the Deftones record. But I told them as soon as I was done, we would record the vocal stuff. He continued: “the songs are long as hell, so it’s like a full LP. I don’t know what it’ll be like or when it’s going to be done or released, but it’s a project I think is pretty rad.”

I don’t see that Palms effort being anything less than epic. They would, really, really have to try hard in order to fuck that up. I mean pure “let’s do dub-step” type fucking up.

Looks like we’re in for the Summer of Chino. New Deftones and Chino/Isis. All those years of listening to Isis, my only thought was that some top notch vocals is the only way this music could be better. I guess they were listening.
So the new Deftones album is going to sound like a Deftones album, only more dynamic (if that’s possible). The songs on the Palms album are long and also rad. Fuck yeah, that’s good enough for me. Chino doesn’t have to convince me of shit. He’s the most trustworthy salesman ever.

Diamond Eyes was nothing like any of the albums before it, yet was undeniably Deftones. I expect that for this album as well.

why does everybody love diamond eyes so much?
I’ve gone through phases of “favourite” Deftones album. Was White Pony, then became SNW… and now it’s the self-titled. Not a huge fan of Diamond Eyes, but then again, I detested the s/t when that came out.
I’ll come to the defense of SNW til i’m blue in the face. It’s a stellar album and I think over time people will realise that in the same way as Self Titled in respect of it being noted as being awesome over time.
I wish I was there with SNW, but I’m not yet. As far as Diamond Eyes, throw on some headphones and give it another shot. I’m not sure how they managed to make that album so freaking heavy and so…well, pretty is the only word that comes to mind. You’ve Seen The Butcher, Rocket Skates, Beauty School is my favorite track.

SNW as far as Im concerned is the best next to WP but we all have our opinions. Im not huge on Diamond Eyes but it is still just a solid all around album. I must say out of all their music I tend to gravitate more to their slower melodic stuff. Its just beautiful so I am hoping for a little more of that this time a round but regardless I think we will all be given another album that will receive much rotation on all of our shitty little phones and stereos.
I gotcha, that makes sense then. I dig some of the slow stuff, but I love the heavier, fast-paced songs.
I love Diamond Eyes. Around the Fur had always been my “go to” album for them, but Lovers (what I call the self-titled) and Diamond Eyes have some real weight.
Saturday Night Wrist is a band falling apart, it’s not as cohesive, but there’s some great stuff on there.
White Pony is awesome, it always will be.
Adrenaline still rocks.
Eros? I can’t wait to hear it, I hope they release it someday.

I should also chime in about Palms….
Remember when Chino was going to do an EP with Mogwai? I still have that magazine article. Made it sound like it was already recorded. I remember record store employees talking excitedly about it.
Yet nothing happened.
I’m definitely looking forward to Palms. I almost have the entire Isis discogragphy.

chino thats why i love deftones so much, so many different soundscapes that u can tell everyone in the band put there stamp on it. i know its cliche but ive been a fan since i first saw you at the warped tour in northampton , mass, like 16 years ago and since then it always seems like anytime theres been a hardship, deftones seem to always end up in my stereo. 3 years ago i lost my father in a motor cycle accident and i “need” to tell you that diamond eyes got me through so many days, especially ‘risk’. it was like u were singing to me. cant wait to see ya august 9th in mansfield, ma. thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you,”you found a way to save me”
Wow that’s crazy, that’s the first time I saw them too and it changed my life musically.
I don’t even need to comment, simply being present with like-minded Deftones/Isis connoisseurs does it for me! A bunch of men with top-notch musical tastes… Cheers all ya’ll!

you’re right MFL! by boasting of not commenting, I in fact did comment, good looking out…
You mean to tell me that A.) we’ve been waiting for over a year for an EP from Palms and that B.) he hasn’t even tracked the vocals for it yet? The post made a few months ago seemed to imply that it was basically a wrap. I feel cheated. I still anxiously await though! It just seems to me that if Harris, et al. wanted to make this a full time deal they would have to enlist someone other than Chino.
