Trioscapes – Separate Realities
Metal Blade Records 2012
It makes perfect sense that Trioscapes came together as a result of a planned Mahavishnu Orchestra cover. The trio, who most famously feature Between The Buried And Me bassist Dan Briggs, are wholly infused with the same penchant for adventurous jazzy introspection.
But much like T.R.A.M., this outfit, who are rounded out by drummer Matt Lynch and saxophonist/flutist Walter Fancourt, tether themselves not only to the erratic expressionism of jazz fusion; but a touch of prog rock styled consciousness expansion as well.
A bombastic and solely instrumental affair, Trioscapes are predominantly led by the ropey bass grooves of Briggs. Their incisiveness and edgy tones cut the path for the excitable skronky horns and ever-unpredictable percussive collapse that follows.
Despite its heady nature, a sense of playfulness is exhibited throughout the release. Be it an odd sound manipulation or the usage of unexpected instrumentation (look no further than a cartoon head hit and what sounds like an xylophone on the title track;) not everything here is to be taken seriously.
But while the trio are certainly having fun, there is a determinism instilled within their songs that keeps them pulling to an eventual conclusion. It’s a meaty listen that runs the sonic gamut from ethnic to animated.
Dynamically charged and musically gifted, these three plow through a colorful array of punchy grooves and extravagant jamming. But rarely do they get lost in the clouds thanks in part to the considerable weight of their low end focus and continual stylistic shifts.
Abrasiveness emerging from heady indulgence rather than overpowering distortion is a refreshing change of pace. This outfit may never truly fall deep in the pocket for long, but their perpetual counter-rhythmic tension and tendency to play off each other works wonders in keeping things fresh.
It’s not for everyone, but those who have record collections that start at Animals As Leaders and end at Zappa are in for quite a treat.

From what I heard from the singles I can’t wait to hear this cd I thinks going to be a treat even tho my iPhone tells me my music collection starts with a.f.i. And ends with wu tang clan
**starts with wu-tang and ends with wu-tang (fixed that for ya)
Sounds like itll be stellar….
If you like this stuff, and I do, find some old 70′s & early 80′s Passport records, led by a German dude named Klaus Doldinger, Curt Cress on drums. “Cross Collateral”, “Infinity Machine”, and “Doldinger Jubilee” come to mind.
The Prog-Rock Palace <3
Have never heard of these guys but this is frikkin awesome stuff! =D
anymore new bands like this around that you guys would reccommend?
I don’t know much about the current progressive rock music world, but I can tell you that King Crimson is fucking phenomenal and that you should listen to them…. alot.
Thanks. I’ll have to check them out. I’ve always heard their name but never gave a listen. I like this metal stuff with Sax and jazz. Really cool stuff.
KC went through a lot of lineup changes, but my favorite period by them is when they released : Red, Larks Tongues, and Starless/Bible Black. Can’t go wrong with those three. Some of the best atmospheric rock music I’ve ever heard.
The Adrian Belew era should not be missed either “Discipline” is required listening. Between The Buried and Me song “Swim To The Moon” intro briefly lifts the riff from KC song “Frame by Frame”, which I saw as a nod to the masters rather than a rip-off. Also check out KC album “Beat” before you die. Enjoy.
pretty excited to see kcproject when they open for dream theather belew is a pretty cool guitar player and sings like the talking heads who are awesome
Thanks for the suggestions, will check out KC tonight.

This kinda provides the soul I needed for the TRAM album. Much more fulfilling in my opinion.
My buddy and I had some fungus on Friday and last night. This CD was thrown on and it’s been in my car stereo for days straight. During our trip, this cd made a cut on its palm and I made a cut on my palm & we became blood brothers. This is the kind of music I’d love to make.
