Limp Bizkit’s Wes Borland: “Please Explain To Me What There Is To Like About Dream Theatre”

Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit/Black Light Burns fame does not appear to be a fan of progressive metal outfit, Dream Theater. Some excerpts from a series of conversations and posts made by Borland through his Twitter yesterday, April 20th, can be found below:

“Please explain to me what there is to like about Dream Theatre. Please. I accept your challenge. Maybe”

“…I know I’m in Limp Bizkit, one of the most hated bands in the world. But those guys can NOT write songs. Not a band.”

“…Musicians are not mathematicians. Feeling and soul over technique and speed. Not buying it and never will.”

“Enjoy Dream Theatre everyone! What a fantastic…. thing.”

If you ignore who the message is coming from, the message is correct. Obviously it’s kind of hypocritical for someone from Limp Bizkit to make fun of another band or musician, no matter who. But I agree, I think Dream Theater is boring as shit.

      • Yea I mean, granted, they’re great musicians technically speaking. You can’t take that away from them…but I think Between the Buried and Me destroys Dream Theater. They pull off the progressive metal sound like no other. Dream Theater is for the music geeks that go “whoa, now there is a band that knows how to pluck the strings” and for the people who like to show off. But lets be real here. John Petrucci can slay Wes Borland any day of the week when it comes to technicality. By the same token I think Wes has way more soul in his playing that John has.

i could care less who’s a dream theatre fan or not, but lets not go making comments that throw us back to 1999 and sound like a point best made by a TRL audience member helping carson introduce the nations #3 video limp bizkit’s n’ 2gether now! bottom line dream theatre’s ” ministry of lost souls” has more soul than “nookie” and that’s only 1 example

Mtv stopped having any usefulness the second Carson Daly joined.

Fuck TRL…Fuck Reality TV…Fuck taking Headbangers Ball off the air… and for the sake of making sense change the name from Music Television to Everything but Music Television.

Seriously when is the last time they played a fucking video? Does Mtv still exist? Fuck I’m old

I’m going to interject my useless opinion into these MTV ramblings:

Best show overall that MTV ever had: 120 Minutes

Wes is just pissed he can’t hang with these guys. I’ll admit they are not everyones cup of tea but Dream Theater do write some epic material even if it’s not “too heavy”.

Come on now, Berklee sends nearly every applicant a “YES! we will take your money!” letter. Particularly before 2006 when their standards were basically “Guitar? check. Wallet? check. Check please.”

Borland is correct in his assertions. I tried to get into Dream Theater but to no avail. I do recall one decent song though called ‘Puppies On Acid’ that was fairly heavy. It was very short and an instrumental.

        • Exotic animal petting zoo, periphery, ion dissonance, the list just goes on. Wes Borland can suck it.

According to my math teacher. (I did not research this so I am not backing this claim 100%) the side of the brain that thinks in mathematics is the same side that processes music so if your good in math you have a high likeliness to be good in music

        • Southpaw, your remedial Math teacher is about 50% correct. The right side of the brain( or the “creative” and “artistic” side) is also a huge part of the equation when it comes to creating palatable musical compositions.

I can see how the vocals aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but other than that I don’t see what there isn’t to like. The music has tons of soul, consideration, and creativity. I’m not only referring to Dream Theater but the same can be said for Liquid Tension Experiment. This is the shit.

The genesis of this is simple….

Wes – “Hey Fred how are you still famous after all this time?”

Fred – “Dude, check it out. Go on your computer and say something stupid that might make people hate you and then like, it’ll go on the internet and people will read it. Then they get mad and your name blows up everywhere and you can like make bad albums or no albums at all for a couple years. People will get so mad that you are still alive, you’ll be famous.”

Wes – “Seems legit. I’ll try my best. Thanks Fred, you’re a good… I think you’re… I like your hat.”

    • I’m with the majority of you. I like some stuff by DT, but they definitely aren’t my favorite band. With that said, I would rather listen to DT than LP(or anything else that Wes is in) any day of the week. Truth be told, if I am going to listen to some Dream Theateresque prog metal, it’ll more than likely be some Symphony X.

    • I’m a fan of Wes, not Limp Bizkit. I’ve never gotten into Dream Theatre. They’re music is too scattered and all over the place. But I’m a huge fan of BTBAM. Moral of the story, everyone likes what they like. Wes just has the power and fame to express his opinion to the masses. It is what it is ya’ll.

I think everyone here has missed the point. He asked what’s so great about Dream Theater? He wants to know. Allow me to answer that question. They’re aren’t Limp Bizkit. That’s enough for me.

    • Well, I have listened to all of Dream Theater’s music. I have heard about bands supposedly making their music mathematically like Dream Theater. But it’s not like they get out a calculator and come up with songs. They still create tunes the old fashioned way, and then tweak it afterwards. Songs like Forsaken, Panic Attack and Peruvian Skies have TONS of heart and emotion in them, and not just the lyrics. They aren’t one of my favorite bands, but they are definitely an amazing group.

I hope he wasn’t trying to compare them to Limp Bizkit… I can’t think of a band with less emotion and passion other than Limp Bizkit… I also can’t think of anything Borland does on a guitar which isn’t done better by every other rock/metal band I listen to, and last I checked it was 617 artists according to my mp3 player. They have a couple of cool/fun songs, but as far as passion/emotion in music goes, LP is the Justin Beiber of metal.

Plus Dream Theater doesn’t wear Halloween costumes while they write and perform music. I don’t understand how a weiner who does the “dress-up” querk for his music to get noticed, can slam another band for not having passion in their music.

This reminds me of an interview I once saw with Corey Taylor, way back when Iowa came out, and he was slamming bands like Linkin Park for not being angry and heavy enough. Now that Corey has grown up, he has realized the true beauty of music.

      Borland is a silly person

Wes Borland is a delusional idiot. How bout you go make some music yourself, Wes? Golden Cobra? Did that ever even get released? Who the fuck cares? Limp Bizkit is an irrelevant pile of dog shit that is aflame on America’s front porch. I will sacrifice more than a brand new pair of Nikes to stomp that flame out. You are musicians, yet no one hears anything you write. What purpose do you serve at this point? Making tweets dissing a band that has a dozen + albums of complex music you couldn’t play, and a band that continues to sell out shows around the world is just dumb dumb dumb. Much like the personnel of Limp Bizkit….. dumb dumb dumb and dumber.

    • Dream Theater is for people with more sophisticated taste in music. And sadly most of America is stupid which explains a lot about Jersey Shore and many fags on this thread.

Because they don’t have a mid-30′s man “singing” about chocolate starfish, gold cobra’s, and hatorade in a voice that sounds worse than a boy hitting puberty. P.S. Black Light Burns isn’t that grand either Wes.
