Soulfly’s Max Cavalera Diagnosed With Bell’s Palsy

Roadrunner Records have announced that Soulfly founder Max Cavalera is recovering from Bell’s Palsy. The label offered the following on the matter:

Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera is recovering from a bout with Bell’s Palsy, a temporary condition that is a form of facial paralysis resulting from a dysfunction of the cranial nerve VII (the facial nerve) that results in the inability to control facial muscles on the affected side.

Cavalera was diagnosed with a case of Bell’s Palsy last week upon his return from Australia. He consulted a doctor and was put on a course of antibiotics, is improving greatly and is expected to make a full recovery imminently. He thanks fans for their concern and well wishes and wanted his supporters to know that he is okay, since the condition manifests in the face and he ultimately didn’t want fans to worry.

Of his recent illness, Max said, “I woke up one morning after coming home from Australia and the whole room was spinning. I looked at Gloria and said, ‘There’s something wrong here.’ She said, ‘Your face looks weird.’ I went to the mirror and couldn’t move half of my face. We thought I was having a stroke, so we rushed to the hospital.

I learned my condition was called Bell’s Palsy but I’d never heard of that. It’s a f—ng weird disease. My right eye won’t blink, and half of my face feels like I’ve been punched by Mike Tyson! It hurts like hell. Anyway, I am leaving for Brazil. The show must go on and this Bell’s Palsy ain’t gonna stop a metalhead from his duties. I hope I’ll be OK and thanks to all the fans concerned with me. Stay Metal.”"

Soulfly will release their new album “Enslaved” through Roadrunner on March 13th.

    • “The show must go on”? You would think not having control over half your face might affect one’s ability to sing. Maybe not though.

Thankfully this is just temporary. I couldn’t recall what Bell’s Palsy was when I read the title, so I just saw “palsy” and thought this was some serious shit.

    • Would be a cool “based on a true story” Soulfly video idea. But instead of recovering he peels off all his skin and turns into a demon or something. Or a huge bell. Yeah.

This sucks for Max that he must endure this but honestly, and not to be a dick, but this wont affect his vocal performances any… Stay strong max, get well soon!

    • If the prognosis is accurate here, he’s damn lucky he got the care he did when he did. My dad got this shit like a year before I was born… fucked him up bad. That was almost 30 years ago, so I’m sure they’ve made developments since then. Hope he crushes the shit. Say what you want about Soulfly, but the dude is a fucking legend. Ready to hear all of Enslaved.

    • Well I have always been a big fan of Max era Sepultura and hope he gets better. He’s aback trooper. Having this shit really sucks, I got it once mysteriously at age 19 and it’s fucking scary. But a little eastern medicine and acupuncture and it was gone in two days.
