Korn – The Path Of Totality
Roadrunner Records 2011
Korn‘s tenth studio album, “The Path Of Totality“, will surely be a divisive listen for many of the bands longtime fans. Essentially a collection of collaborations with various up and coming dubstep artists; it finds the group embracing the aforementioned nascent electronic genre with a youthful eagerness.
Still, while the effort has certainly been a love affair for the bands resident electronica head/DJ Jonathan Davis; its integration with the rest of the outfit isn’t always exactly as heartfelt.
To be sure, the very nature of dubstep, with its wobbling bass throbs, agitated tempos and aggressive ambiance lends itself to metal surprisingly well. But that’s not to say that Korn have mastered or perfected the interesting hybrid on display here.
In enlisting a large list of collaborators that includes the likes of Skrillex, Downlink & Noisia among others; the band have been able to craft a readily diverse listen. Truly Davis seems most at home throughout the effort, laying down his trademark melancholic wails and angsty howls.
This is not a surprising development given that the album’s direction came largely from him. Where things get a bit more stiff is when it comes to the performances of his bandmates. Rather than fluid expressionism, they often blindly follow what feels like submitted loops from the efforts contributing artists.
Because of this The Path Of Totality” comes off like a long distance studio experiment rather than the cornerstone of a new genre. Its frankensteined nature sees it repeatedly plagued with momentum problems and largely uninteresting songs. Sure it captures some intriguing sonic textures and pushes some creative boundaries.
But in the end it feels more like a collection of scattered studio sessions and shoehorned contributions. The riffs are reduced to bland droning textures and restrained jagged lunges. The rigidly electronic-styled drums are even less lively, sounding like little more than a cut and paste programming session.
The bands trademark drop-tuned low end also takes a backseat to pulsing bass dives and drops. Beyond the vocals, the only real tie to the bands roots found here is probably the electronically altered bagpipes found on “Bleeding Out“.
Basically, in bending themselves to their collaborators they have sacrificed much of what makes them Korn. Honestly, the effort is more what one would expect from a Jonathan Davis solo album than anything else. At this stage in their career Korn seem unable to capture any of the fire that once made them so relevant and innovative.
Looking at their back catalogue the desperation to revitalize and reinvent themselves seems painfully apparent. Whether it be rampant guest appearances, working with pop producers, an acoustic album or a flaccid attempt at returning to their roots — the group seem to lose more and more of that initial spark with each failed attempt.
“The Path Of Totality” may have some cheap thrills, but does little to break the unfortunate cycle.

COMMENTS
i actually like every song on this album.
^^^ wanker… i actually gave cannibal a shot on youtube and it was the worst thing ive ever listened to
Really? The worst thing you ever heard? That’s amazing. Actually, that’s incredibly impressive. What a fulfilling life you must be leading only NOW to stumble across a killer tune like “Cannibal” and have it be the worst thing you’ve ever heard. That means that the Dope discog, Limp Bizkit discog, Creed discog, Every country song you’ve ever heard, everything Bono has ever done, Nickelback, and every single song you’ve ever heard on the radio since you evolved from tadpole status must seem like Grammy gold to you. You know what that makes you and everyone else that shits all over creative balls and chance-taking artistry? It makes you AWESOME. Totally fucking cool. Goddamn, I wish I had the balls to drop blanket statements with no critical value like that. I just don’t have the brain capacity for that kind of intricate criticism you and your kind so gallantly spread across the internets, making sites like this wellsprings of valuable guidance and musical advice. So keep up the posts man, it makes being a fan of music fun. It makes being in the minority fun. It makes being a fan of bands like Korn alot of fun, when what they do in one week dwarfs the pithy accomplishments of your entire life. God, I wish I could think like you. It would just make thinking so much easier.
Ok, Jonathan Davis. Keep the childish rants to your lyrics. Also, speaking of blanket statements, pick up a Hank III album while you’re at it too.
Jeez. That guy really sounds like a Korn fan. Oh yeah, you’re really gonna write off the entire genre of country? This guy really has it all figured out. Maybe I should start listening to dubstep.
Heh heh, killer tune. Love it.
While I can understand one’s need to defend their favorite band, especially in the name of innovation…. Sorry pal but in this case its like trying to defend O.J.
“We were dubstep before dubstep was dubstep”
I could give a fuck about dubstep, and at this point same for korn, what you call chance taking I call a cross between “hey gimme my paycheck and please don’t forget about me! Honestly if you’re a hardcore korn fan(over the age of 21) I’m shocked you can stomach this trash, and frankly calling it trash is being nice. Call me hipster I could give a fuck since I make my own assessments. Plenty of bands out there who deserve far more credit and notoriety for their current work(where in some cases living off 10 bucks a day) than anything korn has done since take a look in the mirror, just my opinion
“take a look in the mirror” was terrible. that’s exactly what happens when korn forces themselves to be something they’re not….the korn from the first two albums. you can tell the band is out of its element when they try to accommodate their “fans” from the beginning days. the result are albums like “remember who you are” or the aforementioined “take a look in the mirror”, which come off as contrived and out to please everyone else but themselves as artists. Korn has always been a band open to experimentation, and I agree with JD in that they really nailed it with the new album.
apparently koRn fans are slightly evolving cuz this one seems to have learned a few “adult words” and is proceeding to ramble every one of them off one after another. Good job, what a waste!
I agree completely that Luzier is wrong for Korn. Ray Luzier displays talent.
hahahahaha.
Thank the lord we’ve still got Stillwell….
I’ll never give up on Stillwell. I know they’ll always be consistently shithouse.
I may even get Stillwell tattoo.
The album is surprisingly decent. I expected a shitstorm of horrible and instead got something pretty damn listenable.
my reaction exactly.
the “listenable” part and the amount of non-Korn performers is not at all unrelated.
Someone tell Davis to go solo and leave Korn behind. It’s clear that he’d rather delve into electronica, and bringing Korn along for the endeavor is and has been proving to be a waste of time and sound. You’re 40+ and still “angry”? Time to grow up, Jonny boy.
LMGDMFAO! Angry about his bank account? Angry about recording garbage that gets deemed album of 2011 by revolver?(See bullshit in webster’s)
Oh I know he’s angry that his band still seems to get top billing at any American tour/festival despite the fact that REAL rock/metal fans would rather see a full set by opening “nobodies”! Thats gotta be it
Actually, sir, I’m saying that BECAUSE of his bank account, he can afford to drop the Korn name and start anew in this electronic direction he obviously loves to embrace. The remaining members are instrumental ornaments by this point. Let Korn go, and start fresh, leaving “anger” behind, because his portrayal of it has become a joke to so many. After hearing Davis’ stint with Infected Mushroom, I’m not at all surprised with this new Korn album. Hell, Davis at times even sounds like he’s having FUN! which is great and all, but it is NOT Korn. Just sayin’.
SYOTOS had some really good songs, and a cool vibe, but Untitled was kind of rushed and uneven. Korn III was a fucking disaster.
I haven’t picked this up yet, but yeah, everything I’ve heard and read so far points to trainwreck.
Oh and Ray Luzier sucks. In no way shape or form a valid replacement for Silveria.
I really just came on here to make fun of everyone, but Luzier is way better than Silveria. Listen to Army of Everyone.
@Aggroculture:
You must be big into CK eh?
My condolences.
Listen to Army of Anyone? I would rather slice my ears off.
this comment made me totally disregard your previous one. ray luzier is incredible. maybe it takes another drummer to understand that?
I’d rather slice your ears off.
it sounds like they might already be sliced off, judging by your distaste for luzier’s drumming.
If you need to be a drummer to get Luzier, he sucks. His drumming is all over the place, and all wrong for Korn. I mean, listen to Korn III: it’s a fucking mess, and the drumming on that album sounds like shit, dragging the band down. He completely fails to provide the heavy groove that has always been the backbone of Korn’s music.
Korn fucked up by refusing to bring musicians into the fold as equal partners when Head and David left: instead, they chose hired guns with no artistic investment in the band, only a financial one.
I didn’t know drums provided “groove”.
Luzier is a fucking monster. But as previously stated, wrong for Korn
I think Korn brought him in, in order to compete with the metal scene at the time, They wanted(not needed) a more modern heavy metal drummer/vibe. He’s a very ‘modern’ hard rock drummer. Very creative
After this record they won’t even need a drummer, There are zero real drum sounds on here.
@Aggro actually I’m not a drummer and I noticed how good Ray Luzier was before he joined Korn, in a random Army of Anyone studio session video. Dude is a beast, and for you to say his drumming in Korn III was a mess and failed to provide the heavy groove, shows you know nothing about drums either. I suppose the Dream Theater drummer sucks too, I mean his shit is practically all over the place.
Don’t assume the drums on that album sounding like shit were his fault – he just joined a gigantic heavy rock band desperate to rekindle an already-burnt out fire; they WANTED the shitty, canny, low-production feel from their first 2 albums… I am sure he had very little say in that.
I may “know nothing about drums” but I’ve been listening to rock and metal for 20 years and I know what I like. The drums on Korn III are shit. I am not just talking about the sound (they sound shit too), but the actual drumming itself. Not once does Luzier have it in him to lay down the kind of groove that Korn has always relied on to make their music work. Korn is all about groove. Once you fuck that up, everything is lost. It’s like Luzier’s never listened to a Korn record (unlikely) or he’s unable to reproduce the kind of drumming that Korn’s sound needs to work at all. Korn III falls flat on its face for many reasons (shitty sound, bad bad songwriting, no good riffs, etc), but the main culprit, for me, is Luzier’s drumming which is scattershot, confused, stilted, and unable to keep a steady groove going at any point. If he was such a good drummer, he would have understood that. But he didn’t, and he’s not.
I bang on about this because Korn used to be one of my favourite bands, and it’s sad to see them self-destruct like this.
i have a feeling that this album got such high rating is because most people hated it so much they didn’t even bother voting…
Dammit! You got me there sir! I suppose my only defense for not voting would be my undying belief that anything/everything you could ever “vote” for is per-determined. Pardon me, I’ll bring myself back to the basement with my tin-foil hat.
Whoa. Korn is still a band?
People still live under rocks?
On this rating thing, how do you give something no stars??? I’m having trouble with it.
probably the same way i would rate your comment zero stars in the creativity category.
No You
five stars and best record of the year
http://www.dagheisha.com/prod/music/reviewCd.jsp?idCd=6051
there were a lot of great albums this year, but this one is definitely on my top ten list. i’m assuming from the link that you are Italian? are you also a fan of linea 77?
Korn went full on neon. Don’t dig dub-step so no idea why I even tried to give this a chance. But, I did and I’m poorer for it.
The Skrillex collabos are really good, and I also like songs such as Burn the Obedient and Let’s Go. The are also some really bland songs (Sanctuary, My Wall), but overall it’s not as bad as some people try to shove it down your throat. Make up your mind AFTER listening to some of these tracks.
My thoughts exactly…
Wook – you nailed this review
God damn it Korn, what is it with all your album writing ‘Issues’ lately? I wish these motherfuckers would ‘Take A Look In The Mirror” and “Remember Who You Are”. They should just play “Follow The Leader” with metal bands like multiple nu metal bands jhave and stop thinking that they are metal’s “Untouchables” This cd was fucking “Trash” that didnt even have real instruments on it. It’s a “Dirty” trick that these fuckers are “Counting On Me” to buy this shit. I use to be a big Korn fan but now I have “Seen It All”. This is a “Tearjerker” ending to Korn’s once decent career. Bring Head back and maybe we could all get to where “Life Is Peachy” again. Til then, later “Faget(s)” and “See You On The Other Side”
i’m sorry, but “take a look in the mirror” was probably the worst album they ever did.
Nowhere in there did I say it was good…why don’t you re-read it there champ..
i just got owned. sorry. i like what you did there…it’s kinda like what mustaine did lyrically on the title-track from 13.
Why would you write such a thing?
Skrewberry Kush on the brain, that’s probably bout 90% of it.
BloodyBoneKummer, you rock and I feel the same. I have been into Korn their entire catalogue till now, I own all their albums, their merch, been to their gigs and read their reviews, interviews, followed them every way I could, they were my fave band….not anymore. JD has ruined it for me, some of the comments he made about Korn fans has upset me and I honestly feel this album is not metal, so I am done with them. Its not that I dont embrace change, I have liked everything else they did, but this is not even in my taste area, its not in my genre and JD is making the other band members redundant by use of electronica, good job I got to see a real metal band in Machine Head play last Sunday, top concert and no dub shit
JD wasn’t lying about the narrow-minded fans.
The album’s not terrible, but Dubstep is already over-played. If this would of came out when it was supposed too, then it might of gotten a better review. By now we’re all sick of Big Chocolate & Skrillex dipping their nuts in the metal scene it’s not original anymore.
I miss when Techno & Dance were just that. Now everyone wants the sub-genre “Dubstep” which is 14 different sounds total. Oh, I get it now… “The Path Of Total Dubstep sounds / fun”.
Fuck Korn. Fuck Dubstep. The only problem with this review is that its 1/2 a star too high.
you’re cool.
Relative to post-1998 Korn? Yes. Yes I am.
Honestly, do you have this thread on alert or something? Every time someone posts a negative comment about this album, you’re all over it like flies on freshly shat shit. Not to mention the fact that you seem to take personal offense to negative comments about a band that probably wouldn’t piss on you to put out a fire.
You’re getting butt-hurt at other people’s opinions. You’re either a) still in high school, or b) majoring in Politcal Science…and judging by the intellectual calibar so sorely lacking behind any of your posts that I’ve read thus far, I’m going to go ahead and make the deductively valid argument that it is the former. And, if you’re a grown man…well…you’re a perfect living example of why programs for aggressive eugenics should exist.
Now…back on topic…
I’ve listened to the album and I am not at all impressed. I haven’t been impressed since “Life Is Peachy” but I always gave Korn the benefit of the doubt because they were such a big part of my life back in high school. But I grew up and realized that lyrics are important and so is creativity. The new album arguably does not display any sort of creativity. Let us break this down, shall we?:
Lyrics: Jonathan Davis wrote them…enough said.
Music and Song Structure: Dub-step…not their creation. Added guitars, you say?…Wow…probably took a solid 2 minutes per song to do (and I’m probably being generous there).
In summary, Korn capitalized on a new, somewhat popular style of music. They are no better than any of the pop artists on the radio right now using Pro Tools to make them sound like robots. It is just too painfully obvious that they are just trying to keep themselves in the game. I cannot, in good conscience, ever pay a sent for this atrocity.
*cent
but seriously… i was into the s/t when it came out and bought it before life is peachy was even an idea. i then got into follow the leader. granted, i was 11. now, 15 years later, music has changed, aggressive muisic has changed, and technology and production have made unimagineable adjustments. there is no way that the same kids who bought the s/t when i did and progrssed through metal the way i did can listen to this and say, “wow, that is some fine collaboration and contribution to music.” it is the equivalent to metallica’s lulu.
I think it’s what Korn should sound like nowadays, the last album was just so tired. Dubstep fits quite nicely into their song structure and style of playing. I like this, it’s not perfect and some songs are duds but overall it’s a good listen. I’m gonna keep in rotation.
fuck it, im going to listen to cave in.
http://www.prettylightsmusic.com
All his shits free, download the newest thing first and then judge.
Its fucking really good shit. You guys should be able to relate with the stuff. Its not noise.
Do it
this thumbs up and down shit is gay. plus there needs to be a counter for how many comments people have left.
i give those titties four thumbs down!!!
(please keep this comment at four thumbs down)
Go on Youtube and listen to Chaos lives in Everything at 29 seconds. Now, go on Youtube and listen to the opening lines of Brittney Spear’s Toxic.
Fuckin seriously?
Having not batted an eye at Korn since Follow the Leader (of which I was a big fan) I HAD to listen to the overtly touted “Album of the Year” and was equally as disappointed as when I heard Davis’ “solo stuff” here earlier this year. Take Korn, dumb it down instrumentally and content wise, and add Linkin park mixed with BassComa and you have this album. It’s not as though bands have never included electronic music with guitars/bass/drums before, and this is as mediocre an example as any.
Also, I’m pretty sure I heard a Papa Roach riff in there somewhere. Revolver is apparently run by the same people who let Justin Bieber write a fuckin autobiography.
Want to truly shit your pants??? Check both these links in order…

What now???? Let the shitstorm begin. I never had respect for these idiots.
Maybe I’m getting old, but screaming incoherently just doesn’t do it for me, and shame on you for linkdropping Avenged Sevenfold. What’s the second link – Disturbed?
i still dust off my old jncos and jock mosh to “blind”.
Wait…What?
i dont know whats funnier, KoRn making a dubstep album or KoRn making a dubstep album that several (4) people like. (whatisyourforte, please keep defending this album, it’s entertaining)
Or people still writing “KoRn”
Definitely one of their best collections! Though not mindblowing, its definitely fresh and a great step at this point in their career. I don’t want the first album again, I have that one. This is what I’m looking for after 15 years. Its great to not hear the same cookie cutter bs that my fav. genre is being turned into as well
4 listens all the way through and still loving it. Each track. Its just a good album, accept it. If it were trash, id gladly say, and I’ve heard a lot of trash but can’t diss thia album.
I like it. i find it funny how there are so many jumping on the lets-bash-korn-cuz-they- tried-something-new bandwagon. who cares, its just music
i can’t believe it, but for some reason i don’t like most of the bands i did ten years ago. oh shit, i grew up! fuck, that came out of nowhere.
I just heard Munky’s new side project Fear and the Nervous System on Octane (XM) and wow… it sounded EXACTLY like the last 3 Korn albums but with less quality in the vocal department (which wasn’t great in Korn’s case). Why would you do a side project just to record songs that would fit greatly on a Korn B-Sides release? At least with Stillwell the dude’s branching out. This is just like Head’s work post-Korn… why the FUCK did you even leave Korn?
Okay. I’m going to be honest. I enjoyed this album and i STRONGLY disagree with WOOKUBUS (yet again) There’s a problem here, i’ve been a long time visitor to this site, many years in the running now, and 9 times out of 10 i have disagreed with the reviews wookubus has written. Strangely enough, we seem to have similar musical tastes in alot of ways. But there needs to be more than just him writing reviews for this site. Alot of ppl come here and one man’s opinions and musical tastes cannot render a valid response for a large, diverse musical audience. wookubus, your narrow mindedness and attitude with each review is staggering, as if your review is the end all, be all statement on each album you write about. And i’m not sitting here defending korn’s new record, i’m simply stating a dissatisfaction with your reviews and pointing out the fact that there needs to be more reviewers opinions on this site. I disagree with your reviews more often than not and judging from others replies, i am not alone. You are the only one who ever reviews, and you seem to be quite stubborn in your tastes and opinions. No personal attack on you, just MY opinion (intending only the betterment of the information that could be found on your site) that maybe bringing on some other ppl that might volunteer to write some reviews for theprp (or some other form of compromise) may not be such a bad idea…
Gold Cobra getting a higher rating is simply ridiculous.
Wrong
Wooks reviews are unlike the rest of the reviews on the internet. They’re short and sweet. He doesn’t do song by song breakdowns, he doesn’t try to describe the music.
He talks about what the band means to him, their growth within there own band and and the music community(a lot of good, “deep” shit)– he obviously knows his shit, and pisses a lot of people off. People mistake confidence and belief as narcissism.
When you piss people off and really please the others, your doing something right. Like metal, rap and prog rock. and dub step, and country……… And adele and Kesha. Fuck Kesha
“wookubus, your narrow mindedness and attitude with each review is staggering, as if your review is the end all, be all statement on each album you write about. ”
– You only get to write one review so it could be considered “end all”, should each review at the end read “I may not feel this way in three years, sorry!”
Im not trying to praise Wook or the site, I’m usually on his side, though sometimes not – For example, Earthtone 9s arc-tan-gent with a 5/5 rating and I think Wook gave Factory 81 and unbelievable 3/5? I just really don’t like the paragraph above.
I’m sure Wook enjoys running the site by himself, who the hell wants to work more?
Pretty much what he said, but yeah Factory 81… Oh to be young and foolish again.
Good album! Love all that hassle around it…keep bitching and the album gets more attention
I liked it, I say revolver was still retarded to put this album over, The Hunter, Thirteen, Unto the Locust(What I believed to be the best). Lol just to piss you guys off I’m going to buy the album.
Foolishly wasting your money is somehow suppose to piss ME off? Great logic brah.
The fact that anyone would willingly listen to this when there are bands like Revocation and Baroness out there blows my mind.
I think I can listen to and enjoy all of the above without having to stick to certain choices. Revocation et al aren’t Korn – and vice versa – and that’s fine with me. I like it all, and still intend to give this record a proper listen. Last I checked, music appreciation wasn’t a zero-sum game.
I willingly listen to and enjoy this new Korn album, purchased two copies of the deluxe edition, but I do enjoy Animals as Leaders, Century, Will Haven, and other “superior” bands.
Korn should tour with hole on the kornhole tour………….no?
Korn does an electronica album and suddenly this is reinventing the wheel? Wake me up when Crossbreed release a new album.
This may be the best reply yet..
was thinking the same thing re: Pitchshifter today.
They did. It’s called “KE 101″. There are maybe 3 good songs on it…and that’s being generous.
BranchDavidianStyle – do I spot a crackwhore amidst the pimp rock palace?? :O
god help us, I keep having this reoccuring dream that now the rap metal bands of long ago will see this little beam of light that is *positive praise* for koRn’s dubstep attempt and they will do as they did before and feel it safe to re-emerge this time sending our society into utter chaos. The market for black rubber bracelets will sky rocket, stud belts will replace all others, the statue of liberty will literally have black and red liberty spikes, and fred durst will replace president lincoln upon the lincoln memorial and the script will read ” yeeeeeeeee c’mon, aaaaaaaaaaaah show me whatchu got”
I think there’s probably a band out there that could do this right. Though admittedly none come to mind at the moment.
Am I the only person who thinks that everyone here (myself included) is a giant asshat for contributing to this 6 page response to a review that was just a little over half a page?
Oh wait, I forgot, this is the internet.
MAH BAD. CARRY ON AND NEVAR FORGET.
Due to my fondness for electronic elements in metal/hard rock (in this case the latter of course), I can find at least a few scant moments of satisfaction on this record, which is more than I’ve been able to say for a Korn record since the tepid Untouchables. They’re not in sync as a band here, but the most crucial elements of their current incarnation tend to surface at this record’s most poignant moments.
Typically, artists look to promote their guest appearances as a marketing ploy, hoping to pull in some crossover fans of other bands. In this case, though, I think most Korn fans would have a hard time distinguishing between the guest DJ’s who are, at most, recognizable only by a fringe fanbase of a fringe and young genre that I do not quite understand. The guest appearances here are only poignant to those established dubstep fans who know what to expect from each DJ, should their styles differ in any significant way (something not evident from this collection).
After a few listens, I can safely say that “Get Up” is one of the most effective blends of the two genres. I first heard this track on SiriusXM’s Octane channel in the summer, and was enthusiastically awaiting more of the same. Simply put, the band did not deliver on my expectation. The only other track that stood out during my few strained listens was a bonus track, “Fuels the Comedy” (though be warned: I can’t vouch for the lyrical content). It’s never a good sign when one of the more listenable tracks on an otherwise flacid album is a bonus track. This is one more piece of evidence that the once might nu-metal pioneer has taken a path not of totality, but a path that leads to distant and abstract attempts at doing what once came naturally: being bold, original, and above all exceptional.
I listened to about half the CD and that was all I could take. I understand now when people say things like “that all sounds the same”. It felt like I listened to the same song like 7 times with only the chorus changing. I thought it was terrible and I used to like Korn & I like some electronic/techno music as well. I actually did think I would enjoy this more but I couldn’t even stand to finish it.
1994: Korn – 1999: Issues. Thats it!
I don’t think this album is horrible. One thing is for sure, it’s definitely not for me. I am quite sad that Korn make me think whether it’s worth following them anymore. See You On The Other Side was incredibly bad, Remember Who You Are doesn’t sound old-school. I know a lot of bands whose demos sound better than that and now this disco. It’s a let down.
