Corey Taylor (Slipknot, etc.) Slams Producer Rick Rubin During Dallas, TX Solo Stop, Footage Available

Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor recently had some less than flattering things to say about his experiences working with producer Rick Rubin (Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers). You can find footage of Taylor discussing his thoughts on Rubin during the Q&A session portion of his recent solo stop in Dallas, TX below:

    • Nice to hear someone shit on Rubin. I wish Slayer would do/say the same thing… who knows, maybe they liked him…
      World Painted Blood had all the thrash sucked out of it. Still decent, but would’ve been a better album if it hadn’t been so damn clean.

      • Agreed. Kudos to Corey Taylor for calling out Rick Rubin and letting people know that not everything the guy shits out is gold and/or platinum.

        And I love all the dudes on here hating on Corey now that they’re above Slipknot and nu-metal. If this was 12 years ago, you would have taken a fucking bullet for the guy if someone spoke negative against him.

          @SteveTango.
          Nah bro, I was 16 when Slipknot made their debute nationally. I was just getting into hardcore around that time. Most likely I was busy taking bullets for other bands. I became a “fan” of slippy around the time of their 3rd album release (whenever that was). I find my favorite today is the first album. Oddly, the 2nd album does not do much for me. The last one falls somewhere in that catagory as well.

        • I’m pretty sure when Slipknot came out, I was listening to Converge all the time. Like the summer of their first album, all I cared about was Petitoning The Empty Sky.
          Plus, I remember looking at them and thinking they were just ripping off Gwar and pretty much ignored them completely.

          @American_Natemare and others ….well it’s a shame that converge’s first album wasn’t petitioning the empty sky which came out around 96. Converge was around for about 6 or 7 years before that. In fact, I have their first full length studio album which came out in 94 called Halo in a haystack. I say that if I’m reading your comment correctly. Also, they are not a copy of Gwar. Gwar is an entirely different/unique entity of their own. There is no one like them that I have heard of seen. They are just plain ridiculous. If anything, they are a copy of mushroom head. Mushroom was around before them, but Slipknot grabbed the spotlight first ( if I remember correctly). I’ll admit that I think the first album is best, and the rest have been mediocre/shit as well.
          I remember Corey Taylor in an interview ripping on Fred Durst, which is kind of funny to see, because at one point, Corey Taylor had become just what he ripped on Fred Durst for. I had lost all respect for him, but this man has made leaps and bounds in the right direction and I believe has humbled himself quite a bit. I talk from the experience of interviewing bands for the radio station I worked at for 4 1/2 years. I think Dez from Coal Chamber/Devil Driver has been one of / if not the most humble dude I have ever interviewed and Corey seems like he is headed in that direction.
          You people rip on him like he didn’t give Rubin any credit. He said, he appreciates what he did and has done. He’s earned his stones, but he’s a shadow of his former self.
          I say this too, with just about every band from the 60′s and 70′s. I hate the beatles, I hate kiss, I hate zepplin, skynyrd, sabbath, blue skeleton, priest etc. etc etc., but I will never forget what they have done for music, and the evolution of the music scene and for that I am thankful for them.

      This coming from a dude who tortures the world with Stone Sour. Regardless of how fucking useless people CLAIM he is these days, Rick Rubin did more for the world of music in his first 10 years then Corey Taylor could in 3 lifetimes.

      It’s like, You’re in a Nu Metal Band and a fucking Dad Metal Band…You’re not that fucking cool, Corey Taylor.

      • There’s no way the amount of effort Rubin put in with Slipknot can even begin to compare to what he put in for Cash. I’d have to assume he realized Cash was an icon and he actually had to show up to work for that project. Slipknot probably didn’t even show up on his radar, so he didn’t really bother. Personal feelings about Slipknot aside, that’s a shitty way to do work. EVERY client should be handled with the same amount of effort. It’s his JOB, and numerous bands have pointed out the fact that, at this point, he’s terrible at it.

    • Come on, after Deloused In The Comatorium and the Jonnhy Cash stuff he didnt produced a decent album. He just fucked the dog and produced shitty music, and Subliminal Verses has a bad sound for a metal band, especially because theres little bass on the overall sound. He`s overrated, and im glad Corey spoke against someone as Rick Rubin (Muse already gave advice against his work). Theres great producers around like David Friedman or Sanford Parker to show how to get the job done these days for metal and post hardcore music.

    • Rick Rubin WAS great, he produced some of my favorite albums and I respect him for it, but Corey wasn’t the first to speak out, Rick is a shadow of his former self and should retire, I’ll admit I like Slipknot, but Corey hasn’t NEARLY achieved as much as Rick, but some of you guys need to realize is that Gods die. Rick Rubin is dead.

    • Agreed that the sound of Subliminal Verses was way off. I read in an interview that Rubin wanted to record to a computer (first two albums were 2″ tape) because he invisined a colder sound for Slipknot. I thought it was ball less and way too clean for a band that was supposed to sound out of control. I also read in a later interview after All Hope Is Gone where Jim Root stated that after working with Dave Fortman, he had greater appreciation for Rick Rubin’s ability to get nine people all on the same page…. Who knows.
