There’s just something goin’ on with this band that I can’t get with lately.
All their merchandise that’s ridiculously priced & all too seemingly full of themselves..

I think it’s more of a business strategy than a ego boost. The mentality is probably that they know a lot of people downloaded over buying the record so here’s something that can’t just be consumed via an internet connection or purchased at a local show. Create something rare and a hard-core fan will buy it and that profit can make up for a few lost record sales.
Granted that could be completely wrong, I guess we’ll know if they start selling wood chips laced with meth.

I understand your thoughts, but there doesn’t seem to be artistic integrity in that. I’m sure next they’ll be having a bake sale.

You hit the nail on the head with “artistic integrity.” It is a fine line for sure. The moment they enter Kiss territory it will be shot. Bake sale wise, Clutch is selling beer and still pumping out good music, who’s to say Mastodon couldn’t sell some cupcakes at show?
Should there be a Brent Hinds mask though then, yeah, sign me up for shotgun on your bandwagon.

    • I find it hard to believe that anything this band does isn’t done with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Like the expiration date for the merch sale included with the Crack the Skye album being 12/21/12. Bands sell merch, and I’d rather see stuff like this than another $30 t-shirt. Shows they actually put some thought into it. I mean, Tool sells Tool necklaces and Tool wallets. That’s fucking lame.
