Mike Patton And John Zorn Team Up For Christmas Single

Mike Patton has teamed up with the ever avant-garde John Zorn for a new Christmas single. The effort will be released on 45rpm vinyl and will find Patton and Zorn tackling “Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire” on the a-side; and Zorn taking on an instrumental version of “Santa’s Workshop” on the b-side.

The Dreamers will round out the instrumental duties on the release. More on that can be found here.

Much as I love Mike Patton’s fooling around, I would really really really prefer a new Faith No More, or Mr Bungle, or Tomahawk, or Peeping Tom album, to this.

      • Oh man, wouldn’t we ALL! Hey, with Tre Spruance on guitar for some FNM duties, at least such a thing is possible. Mike used to say he had a falling out with someone in Mr. Bungle that would have to be patched up before they could re-unite, and since those two jammed with every ex-Bungle but each other, I always assumed it was Tre. 3 cheers for a new Mr. Bungle!!!!!

He’s been joking around for years now: Fantomas, the Zorn bands, Italian songs, soundtracks…great, do what you love. But your talent is kick-ass rock music, and it’d be nice to see some more of that stuff.

        • I don’t see how stuff like the Zorn bands, soundtracks, and even Fantomas are any more of a joke than anything Mr. Bungle ever released or a lot of FNM’s material. The man’s always had a silly side. He’s always made fun, diverse, over-the-top music that is more about genre hopping than expressing deep emotions. Just because what he’s doing now doesn’t have quite as much of a straightforward rock element as his early work doesn’t mean much – it’s not like he was the exclusive songwriter in FNM, Bungle, or Tomahawk (I don’t think he was responsible for the straightforward rock elements of those bands anyway). Besides, I doubt we’ll be seeing new records from any of them, so why hold your breath?

Because those bands had a quality to them that Patton on his own lacks. Patton’s always been a great team player: those bands, as you acknowledge, were bigger than the sum of their parts: WITH others Patton really shines, his wackiness complementing their more traditional leanings, if you will. When he forgets this, and thinks he can do everything on his own, he falters. So forgive me if I pine for a time in which Patton worked well with others instead of trying to go it alone. As for his work with Zorn, it’s by-the-numbers avant fodder. They don’t need each other, and have not, in my opinion, ever made a record together that wasn’t redundant. Personally I don’t care for Fantomas, for the same reason: it’s Patton’s show. The Boredoms were great (and Yamantaka Eye has MOVED ON to make much better music since): do we need a US alt.metal Boredoms tribute act? No.

        • As someone who is self confessed obsessive over Mike Patton, I’d rath have stuff like Peeping Tom and Fantomas over a new FNM or Mr. Bungle. Those bands have been away for so long that I don’t think they would produce something on par with past albums.
As for John Zorn, if you find anything he does redundant, you just aren’t paying attention. He is one of a very few in the field of music that I would call a full blown genius.

I fucking love Patton. I heard new Peeping Tom was already finished, Loveage was also awaiting vocals from him. I don’t think FNM, Bungle, or Tomahawk will put anything new out tho. I was bummed when Tomahawk never toured after Anonymous came out, and why the fuck can’t FNM play King for a Day in the states?

Has anyone seen the new, live Fantomas DVD of the entire Directors Cut album? Spectacular. Zorn should definitely be reported on more in here. Especially with projects like Painkiller and Moonchild. Those ensembles are heavier then a lot of other bands who receive coverage. Here or otherwise.

I was at that NYE show and was amazed how Dale Crover nailed it on drums instead of Lambardo. I saw Moonchild @that same Venue and Zorn didn’t do much except come out for the encore to conduct. Was an interesting night but not as killer as Fantomas NYE. Great American Music Hall is one of the best venues in the country!
