Mushroomhead’s Jeffrey Nothing Addresses Fan Criticisms

Mushroomhead vocalist Jeffrey Hatrix (aka Jeffrey Nothing) has taken to the bands Facebook to address some criticisms leveled against the the band. Here’s what he had to say:

“Some people have a lot of nerve. I’m watching a special on the Beatles. They were basically saying how it was like leaving Prison when they Broke Up! How dare MRH evolve. Everyone should have stayed since the version you loved, Because you say so? Fuck You. Life is Change. wake up, or grow up, or just go away.”

    • Yea I always thought that Mushroomhead lacked something in their music. I remember the first time listening to them at the listening booth in Hot Topic back in like ’98 or ’99. I think it was right around the time the first Slipknot record came out actually. I just remember cringing while listening to it and every time they released a new album it seemed like they got worse and worse, ha. I personally think that those dudes are pissed off that Slipknot gained a helluva lot more attention. It’s pretty obvious that Slipknot was way better, musically. The first song (“Sic”) on the self titled destroys everything that Mushroomhead ever put out and then some…

It’s funny – I had exactly the same experience my first time listening to them. In a Hot Topic, saw the XX cover art, but I’m pretty sure it would’ve been 2001 when that CD came out. I also went in with the preconceived notion that they would sound like Slipknot (because of the outfits), but they don’t. If you listen to Mushroomhead thinking that, you’ll be disappointed and just think they’re a third-rate knock-off. I gave them a chance and became a big fan. XIII is a really good album, their best in my opinion. After that, they starting losing momentum and I lost most of my interest.

    • Has anyone here actually heard the newer material? The last I heard from these guys was from “Savior Sorrow,” and I actually dug it more than a lot of the older stuff. Moodier and more melodic, at least the few tracks I heard. If they kept going in that direction (rather than more stereotypically nu-metal), then I say good for them.

There newest album, “Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children” was a bit dull compared to the others, the songs were good, but I tried not to think of it as Mushroomhead. Their old stuff and new stuff are both great but you have to listen to both with a different set of ears and mindset.

    • anybody who’s only ever heard XX doesn’t know anything about mushroomhead.

the old albums are classics, the new shit is amazing. i was kinda not on board with the whole wyalon thing until about last year, but after giving savior sorrow a second chance and listening to beautiful stories… i’m kinda confused as to what i didn’t like all those years ago.

Personally I think XIII was the best album and totally had a Faith No More feel to it. I haven’t been too impressed with anything after that. I know bands usually change with time and it is silly to expect them to sound the same on every album (with the exception of Unearth)* but I just haven’t dug their progression.
*not talking shit about Unearth, they just haven’t really explored outside their established sound.

    • I’ve always liked this band, even though Savior Sorrow was kind of a letdown. Loved their latest one though, and the earlier stuff with JMann is of course awesome. They do have their own sound.

On the whole, MH are kind of embarassing. Yet they do have some good songs: Sun Doesn’t Rise, for example, is great. But yeah, between wishing they were Slipknot and ripping off FNM, they pretty much disqualify themselves from being taken seriously. A rung above Corporate Avenger and HedPE, but certainly way below Slipknot and Mudvayne.

You guys inspired me to listen to Savior Sorrow and XIII at least once more. I’ve always been a huge fan of XX and nothing ever seemed to match the intensity and craftsmanship (as far as nu-metal goes) of that one. I did like at least a few songs on XIII though so I have some hope held out for that one, while I doubt Savior Sorrow will ever get more than one spin outta me again. Also, you should never compare yourself, however abstractly, to the Beatles when your band isn’t called the Rolling Stones. That’s a life lesson I had to learn the hard way.

    • I’m a bit of a fan of MRH and i don’t even know wtf he’s talkin about, but he has a point about evolution. Unfortunately the majority of us have a problem with evolution when it kinda sucks a bit. The first record was alright, the 2nd was great, the 3rd was even good, and the 4th took time and got better over “15″ listens, but i just cant digest it as more than mediocre. JMann was a huge asset, Waylon is cool, they just need to focus on better song structure and production

“Mushroom” is one word, so why the fuck would you abbreviate “Mushroomhead” (one word in and of itself) as MRH? Almost as retarded as this band has become.
