Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster Frontman Addresses “IV” Criticisms

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster frontman Dallas Taylor has addressed the recent criticism aimed at the more ‘commercial’ sound found on the bands latest album “IV“. Speaking through Facebook, he vented with the following:

“This message is to all of the people that absolutely hate our new stuff, and say we are radio junk now, and have sold out. You obviously have no idea who we are as a band. When we where making this record we knew it would upset a lot of people, but we still felt it was the record we wanted to make, and had to make. This was not a let’s get big kind of record it was more of we have a story to tell, and want the story to mesh with the record.

For all of those talking crap on this record that is fine please keep it up, cause now IV makes more sense than ever. We are glad we are losing you closed minded hateful people. See you have to realize it is not just a band making music, but guys in a band making music so all of your comments are really directed towards us individually which is fine. On that note I am glad you don’t like this record we don’t need negative people/fans like you in our lives. You won’t be missed. dallas taylor

    • Haven’t listened to it yet, so I can’t judge on the quality of it. With that being said, this version of Maylene is completely different than the original line-up/what was on the s/t and II.

        • It’s possible. They have Warner Bros. behind them and all it takes it one catchy hook. Plus the southern rock sound is standard rock radio fair these days.

        • Their single off of III “Step Up” made a ton, it was used it movies, commercials etc… I mean look how many views it has on youtube, almost a million. That is quite an accomplishment considering how abrasive their first album was. I don’t know there isn’t something wrong with mass appeal if you don’t alienate fans you already have.

IV is the first album of theirs I listened to, ever. I had for whatever reason passed over these guys and IV kept me very interested. Which is odd because I normally hate this kind of sound. I did also check out II and III and I like them both as well. So I guess idk what the big outcry is about, these things happen, be happy they didnt pull a black stone cherry and dumb themselves way down.

“Blah blah blah, I got old, we suck now” – Dallas Taylor. I mean that jokingly, only in response to how bitchy his rant comes off as. In all honesty I’ve seen these guys live around the release of “III” and they were awsome live, met Dallas and he was an incredibly nice guy, which really makes me think this sort of behavior is below him. Everything I liked about this band is gone. All the intensity, all the swagger and southern drawl, cheapened to a plastic figure of what this band used to be. Still got 2 1/2 really good albums out of them, sad nothing good can last forever.

    • As some had mentioned, I think it was pretty easy to see this coming given III. First two albums are good and that’s where it stops for me. Saw them live years ago and it was a fun and entertaining set (for Warped Tour). This does come across as a little bitchy, much like Architects did with their latest release, but as with any album I guess you’ll gain and lose fans regardless. Good luck to the guys anyway. I guess.

      • Haha…this made me laugh. I thought about making a similar smart ass comment about him and Underoath. Incidentally, I think Spencer brings more balls to the band. Dallas had more of a bark, which I found a little grating. ‘When the Sun sleeps’ is an excellent intro track to that record though.

Gave the album two straight listens today at work – honestly, it sounds more like a 90′s grunge album than anything. It’s as though they listened to a bunch of Candlebox and STP before writing it. That’s not to say it’s bad by any means – there’s quite a few tracks off of it I liked. While saying that, it certainly doesn’t sound like a “Maylene album.” I’d give it 3/5 overall, and keep doing what you do boys. Saw them open for The Damned Things about a month ago, they still have the energy live.
