Staind Frontman Discusses “Tumultuous” New Album Sessions, Snoop Dogg Collaboration
Staind‘s forthcoming new self-titled album, which many of you have already deemed as a return to their heavier roots, apparently had quite the painful birthing process. Speaking with Billboard.com, band frontman Aaron Lewis offered the following on the making of the record:
“It was full-on falling apart at the seams. Everything just went completely sideways, for so many different reasons. It got so bad that we stopped working (together) and we just went to doing it on our own” in separate locations, with minimal contact with each other. It was definitely the most difficult and trying and tumultuous record that we have made yet.”
The dysfunctional (totally went there!) relationship was documented by a camera crew and will appear on the deluxe edition of the album, which is due out September 13th. Also revealed in the interview was that the band had rapper Snoop Dogg record a cameo on the new album track, “Wannabe“.
However, it doesn’t appear as though the version of the song featuring Snoop will make it onto the final cut of the album. Which, let’s face it, is probably for the best.

red light green light, snoop dogg is genious!
Way to sell us on the album there Aaron!
Call me closedminded or whatever you will but Snoop Dog having an appearance pretty much guarntees I will not buy this album, tremendous loss of respect for the band.
You had respect for them in the first place?
To say nothing of the precedent they’ve set over the last eight albums or so, I couldn’t be less excited to listen to an album where the band members spent little to no time in the same room together. Sounds like a recipe for an album being pulled in five directions. I hadn’t heard it was a return to their heavy roots though, so if this holds true I may bother to give it a spin or two. I’ve long lamented the days of Dysfunction. Great fucking album, especially in its time.
All I read was: “Blah blah blah, all I wanted to do was write sappy acoustic bullshit until the band finally recorded without me and sent me a copy to sing on. It’ll probably be the best album we’ve ever done… well, at least better than the new Limp Bizkit, and that’s all you can hope for, right? I mean fuck. It’s 2011 and we’re still Staind. The fuck can we do? “… I’m paraphrasing quite a bit, but that’s basically it.
It highly seems that the Snoop version will never make it to the final cut of the album. Kind of like the time when Kanye West featured on 30STM’s Hurricane but didn’t make it to the album(Although that song sucked with or without him nonetheless). I’m cautiously excited for this album ’cause about 4 out of the 6~7 teaser songs they put out on the internet were better than I expected after that shit album ‘Country Boy’. Just hope it has more of the Dysfunction era sound and atmosphere.

I, honestly, had no idea that Staind even had the potential to sound like this…kind of sad that they settled for the mediocrity of that FM crap that was my introduction to them. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t give a crap about Staind in the least, but this Paper Wings song is probably the most listenable thing I’ve ever heard from them.
I guess you never listened to ‘Tormented’ or ‘Dysfunction’. Dysfunction was a great album back in the day, heavy and emotional at the same time. Even some songs on their recent albums are as heavy as their recent teaser tracks. They always pushed radio-friendly mellow songs as singles, and Aaron Lewis fucked up with that solo album of his, but they always knew how to make a decent heavy tune.
