Three Dead, Dozens Injured At “Pukkelpop Festival” Stage Collapse In Belgium

Various media outlets have been reporting that a stage collapse at the annual “Pukkelpop Festival” claimed three lives and left numerous injured. The incident, caused by bad weather, effectively cancelled the planned sets by the likes of 30 Seconds To Mars, Bring Me The Horizon, Rival Schools and more. You can find some more details on that over at Altpress.com and Billboard.com.

I actually worked the Indiana State Fair this past weekend. We asked for tickets to the Sara Barallies (sp?) / Sugarland show and were turn down – the only event that we’ve never received comp tickets to. Instead we were going to check out a Naughty By Nature block party about 25 mins up the road, but as we were getting ready in the hotel the fountain outside was blowing sideways. The only photo I snapped of the stage was when Sara was on it, and I also got some photos of it collapsed the next day. We most likely would’ve been down on the floor if we did have tickets, crazy….

      • Interesting insight.
As an event organising you’re really stuck between a rock (weather) and a hard place (1000s of people who are there with paid tickets). So to call it off is tricky. Still, there must a line. Wonder if there is any negligence or blame to be placed on the event people for these disasters?

We watched the press release the following day and they said the stage was designed by a firm out of Tennessee but local workers assembled it. I can’t remember off the top of my head if it had the tie-downs attached to large water barrels that typically accompany such structures. The dome we use can withstand 120mph and has 11 barrels around the perimeter, but granted it’s not nearly as tall as the stage.
