Metallica Record New Outing With Lou Reed, Initial Details Revealed

Metallica have revealed that they have completed recording a new offering that is a collaboration with Lou Reed. The group have laid down 10 tracks for the project and posted the following regarding it on their official website, Metallica.com

“A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that’s “not really 100 percent a Metallica record.” While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we’re not exactly sure when you’ll hear it, we’re beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.

A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou‘s work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. We can’t wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we’ll be back with more details as they come together.”

    • You see, Korn, this is a perfect example of what a band does after they’ve pretty much accomplished everything; go out on a fucking limb and take a huge creative leap, and work with a absolute legend. You don’t make some silly ass dubstep album just so you can follow a trend. You did the same shit with that crunk-rock bullshit.

This is one of those random ass collaborations that could turn out pretty brilliant. Would have preferred ZZ Top in there but Lou Reed is killer.

No way, Reed’s so much more different. ZZ Top would just be one rock band with a harder rock band. Meh. And I don’t think it’s fair to lump in Metallica with KoRn. KoRn keeps building larger and larger ramps with which to jump the shark – Metallica’s just taunting it.
@adam – I’m with ya, “Death Magnetic” was very, very solid. “All Nightmare Long”‘s one of my favourite Metallica tunes now. Great grooves on that album.

As long as this avoids the shitty Load/Reload/S&M/Garage Inc. type of Metallica. Surprisingly, I’m cool with most of St. Anger and the Black Album. And by Garage Inc. I meant disc 1, I love the old Garage Days stuff. This is a risky move, they’ve lost fans for life before. I hope it’s amazing, though I have my doubts.

Velvet Underground was/is amazing… Something tells me that it’s not gonna be that trippy… Not too familiar with Reed’s solo work but when I think about the collab with a heavy rock band, I’m not hearing “Venus in Furs/Heroin/All Tomorrows Parties” with Hammett solos interspersed heheheheheee! I didn’t really care for CFH&DAC “Rebel Meets Rebel”, but it was a feasible collaboration which fit well and complemented eachother… Dunno bout “Velvet Metal” (or even better: Velveeta). Mad respect though…

It’s gonna sound like reload/load/garage Inc….. If only because of Reed… It’s gonna be an album of “mama said”‘s (ooooohhhh)! Maybe a little head bobbin- no bangin. I can def hear James kinda doin some softer vocals to reed music- not toooooooo uptempo

Metallica’s “St Anger” really angered me at first listen, tin can garbage drums. I went back for a double take and was pleasantly surprised at how creative the album was. Same for Load/Reload. “The Outlaw Torn” has to be one of their most original songs in my opinion. I can’t wait to hear this new collaberation =) Way to go Metallica! Now if you can just kick lars Ulrich out of the band and get a decent drummer with out the ego trip then I’ll be your biggest fan =P

@Livedefflo, I’m with ya 110% on the tin-drums, nothing metal about that shit, I am satisfied with Death Magnetic as well despite the previously mentioned drumming issue and maybe its just me but I would’ve figured ‘tallica would capture a better than average sound quality for the album as a whole which I felt could have been tweeked a bit.
