Deftones To Focus On New Album Later This Year

Deftones frontman recently revealed to Billboard.com that the band will be entering the studio in the coming months to begin focusing on writing new material which they hope to have ready for a release early next year.

Speaking on their plans, Moreno stated:

“We’re going to have a month off, but in that month we’re talking about going in and starting to write again, maybe even two or three weeks in a rehearsal spot just recording ideas and keeping it going, so if all goes well hopefully we’ll have some product for early next year.”

In addition to that, Moreno discussed a potential release of the bands previously shelved “Eros” album and the current state of ailing bassist Chi Cheng, who continues to recover from a 2008 car accident.

    • I’d say go ahead and kill yourself if this is the greatest thing you’ve heard of. If not then we’ll read your obituary in 2-3 years!

Not sure I wanna hear Eros, ever. I like the direction in which the Deftones went with the last record, and hope they stay on that path. But this new stuff I’m excited to hear ASAP.

Cause the Deftones wanted to go softer, and that’s not what I want from them. The best part about the Deftones to me, is their intensity.

        • Interesting, because it sounds similar to what Reznor just said about pushing the NIN ‘brand’ some more this year.

Well, they’re being honest. A successful band (or their name, rather) become a product. Either you bite the apple and sell the shit out of it (like Kiss), or sell it carefully while maintaining your (assumed) artistic integrity – like NIN or Deftones. Some brands go from gold to crap (Korn). C’est la vie. It’s a business, after all.

In the end, a band produces music. The output is the product. A painter makes paintings – that’s their product. The Mona Lisa is a product. Product doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

        • My opinion – what I just said was more just a general comment to spur further discussion.

I agree that referring to your musical/creative output as a ‘brand’ and/or ‘product’ is, indeed, not necessarily a bad thing. Yet, it’s funny, because when I originally read this comment by Chino and now Reznor, I initially flinched at the use of those words. It just feels like they’re implying what they do is just something which comes off a generic production line and is then packaged and sold to the masses.

Now, I know that isn’t true, and that their intention isn’t to make sterile, soulless music for a quick buck….It’s just the simple fact that they refer to what they do, in that way, I just automatically think, “…but what you do is so much more than just a ‘product’ etc.”. It has a blasé feel to what they say when they’re quoted in the media.

I realise it’s totally just reading into their comments too much and agonizing over the fact that the artist might not be caring as much about what they create.

When Deftones announce when they plan to release a new album, add 3 years to it. Their next album will drop in early 2015. Write it down.

      • nah, the Tool will come first. they have it easy. all they have to do is listen to their last few albums and rehash that same they’ve been putting out for the last 3 albums.

It was June 2009 when Deftones decided to shelf “Eros” and start working on “Diamond Eyes,” which was released May 2010–less than a year later. I think if they continue to ride whatever wave their on, they can make a new, good album happen within the next year or so. It was back when there was so much internal strife between the members that the band would take 3+ years between albums. I think Chi’s accident, tragic as it was/is, brought them back together and in the right setting to make great music again.

Sidenote: Deftones didn’t play a single song from “Saturday Night Wrist” when I saw them on their current tour. Somewhat surprising, but not the worst idea ever.

howd i miss this news? id like to hear euros at lest once, but i agree probably is “crap” not that all crap is bad i mean people love self titled and saturday but its not my cup of joe. i think riding the wave of the last cd is super fuckin smart to many bands wait too long and over tour and kill the momentum they gained and loose fans that way thumbs up bands take note!

I’d be curious to hear “Euro’s”. They’ve never really done anything I’ve disagreed with enough to jump ship thus far. I’m sure it’s good.

Eros, people, Eros. God of fuckin’ and hotness (colloquial…).
I think they should keep on with the Diamond Eyes wave, keep Eros shelved, and release it in 20 years. We’ll virtual-mosh in the virtual-pit with our virtual-bodies. It’s gonna be awesome.

    • I’d like to hear Eros in less than 20 years. As you guys said, ride the wave. This is a smart idea, they have 5 years or so untill they’re officially “old” – seek the crest.

PS – My bands album is done, http://www.noisetrade.com/oldironsides I think it’s really freaking good, you should give it a chance, or at least give a the last song “March To War” a chance – Its an old school Genesis/Yes 11 minute epic, easy to listen to great song.

@ grantbrochill. I hope you’re right man. They did get diamond eyes out there quickly, and I guess that if they continue to “ride the wave,” maybe a new tones album will in fact come out next year. I’ve been a fan of this band basically since the beginning (yeah, I’m getting old) and after every album they say they’re putting out the next one right away. It never happens. As far as Eros, I personally think they should put it out right away. Considering it was Chi playing bass on the album, his share of the album sales would definitely help towards the recovery effort. I also want to hear it for selfish reasons.

    • i like the idea of a “long, lost record” being released yrs down the road for a band..esp with deftones… i still regard them as my favorite band .. when their time is up, it will be a nice gift when released…..

Even if “Eros” is a laid back Deftones album it would be ok. The more relaxed songs on each of their albums is well worth the listen. I think Eros would be a great release but I wouldn’t expect it to be “hype” so don’t get your hopes up for that. Deftones can pretty much do no wrong either ways.
