Mastodon’s Brann Dailor Comments On New Album

Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor recently discussed the groups new album with Noisecreep. When asked about the general vibe of the new material, he offered the following:

“It doesn’t seem as proggy. There’s moments, but it seems more riff-oriented. It seems a little more stripped down. [2004's] ‘Leviathan‘ was a little more stripped down, and it feels like that to me. Everything always changes once you go in the studio, but at the moment it seems like a really super-heavy Led Zeppelin or something. It has a lot of that [John] Bonham-esque groove to it, but really heavy and dark. I really like playing like that, and when it goes into those parts, I’m psyched.”

More on that can be found at the above-mentioned link.

    • Sounds good to me. I liked Crack the Skye, but it sounded like they were trying too hard. A return to the more effortless, fun style of Leviathan would be good.

I saw Mastodon tour Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye, and both times the vocals were good. They weren’t perfect, but the shows killed.

I’ve always enjoyed Mastodon live. Great energy, and it’s fun to see them pull off the wacky parts in person – i.e. Bladecatcher.
Looking forward to this – I’m all for a return to Leviathan. Nothin’ like a Mastodon riff.

    • @frog – I completely agree. Their vocals in a live setting make me cringe too. On record they kill it though. Good ol’ knob twiddling does the trick.

Agh it s just that mashmouth guitarest the bassist sings better but less, but I think they put on a cool how and drag u into the feel they create. The no words just play and they take there discography and put it together into a show that seems like one kick ass cd, kinda don’t make sense but I know what I mean lol

On the blood mountain tour, thought they were the best band i had ever seen live. Crack the skye tour was disappointing for the reasons discussed. Seems the music just became so complex that singing the parts while playing them was too much to pull off. A return to more screaming will make for a better live show, tho I love the progressive stuff they’ve been doing. We win either way.

Well I’ve seen um when I wasn’t Into um at lest once with slayer wayyyyy back before crack mountain and didn’t really try to get Into it but when I saw um in Rochester (there 2nd home) they where awesome but it sucked cause baroness and between the buried and me where not on the tour any more eve. Tho we paid to see them (they changed the date 2x probably cause that guitarist is a drunk)

    • I saw Mastodon 2 days in a row like a week after Lifesblood came out and then saw them on the Crack The Skye tour with BTBAM and Baroness and thought they were great both times. Yeah, the vocals aren’t great live but I don’t go see bands to hear them sound like they do recorded.
Also, Baroness stole the show. Absolutely amazing live band.

    • I had tickets to see baroness when they opened for deftones. to bad I missed it because of work related emergency. bummer. add baroness to the list of bands I need to see.

    • @Nate – I agree, I don’t go to a show to hear them sound like a backtracking either. But there’s a line and Mastodon, well…..Anyway, totally not bashing them, because I think they’re a great band. I just remember hearing Oblivion for the first time on record and thought “Sweet hotcakes with maple Syrup!” and then I heard them play it live and thought, “Rough.”. It highlighted to me just how much studio production helped them out and made them sound so much better. Dailor has a good live vocal though.

    • @Surly, I guess maybe I saw them on a good (i.e. not shitfaced) show. They sounded really good. I know I’ve seen some footage of them where the vocals definately aren’t good.
But what to I know, I like Bob Dylans voice.

Listen to the Aragon concert they released last month. It’s pretty horrible. Mastodon has been one of my favorites for years, but I don’t ever see that thing getting put into the CD player again, unless it’s for The Bit. Luckily, both times I have seen them, Brent’s vocals have either been down in the mix or the acoustics in the clubs were awful and I couldn’t hear him well. Either way, I’m blessed.
