dredg Debut New Track “Upon Returning”, Discuss Video Shoots, Etc.

dredg‘s new track “Upon Returning” has premiered online over at Altpress.com. The song serves as the new single from the bands forthcoming album “Chuckles And Mr. Squeezy“, with a video for it having recently been filmed in San Francisco, CA.

Speaking on the shoot, band guitarist Mark Engles offered:

“We just wrapped the video for ‘Upon Returning’ with San Francisco photographer Merkley???. He also designed and shot our new press photos. It was easily the most fun and interesting video we’ve done to date. Let’s just say that now we’ve all swam in suits and dress shoes, and we have some bruises on our faces.

Our next video shoot is going to be with illustrator Alex Pardee and Stephen Reedy for ‘The Thought of Losing You,’ which we’re shooting this month. The concept will be full of contrasting imagery: one moment dark and depressing, the next shiny and glamorous with some monsters thrown in somewhere. Being fans of Alex Pardee’s illustrations has us very excited.”

Chuckles And Mr. Squeezy” isn’t scheduled to arrive in North American stores until May 03rd, but in the meantime you can sample all tracks from the effort over at Amazon.

    • Don’t like this as much as the other song they released from the album. In fact, I don’t think I like this track at all. Sad the days of Leitmotif and El Cielo are gone :(

    • you guys are nuts, this song is WAAAAY better than the last one they released, which had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. With that said, the production SCREAMS Dan the Automator – they really weren’t kidding. I don’t really think his production works with their sound – I liked this track a lot better live.

    • Song is awesome, I’ve rolled with every change dredg has thrown my way and loved them all. People need to realize that Dredg are artists in every sense of the word and will never make the same album twice. They do want they want and don’t give a fuck what you think about it. The next one after this will sound nothing like this one. They are and always will one of the most innovative, genre-defying bands ever to make music. “Sad the days of Leitmotif and El Cielo are gone”, boo fucking hoo. Those albums were great but do you really expect them to copy themselves? Bands that do that lead a boring existance trying to recapture their relevance and move units. (see Korn, Limp Bizkit) People were saying the same shit after “Catch Without Arms”, saying it was too poppy and then they release the sprawling, epic “The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion”. Their 2nd best album in my opinion, after “El Cielo”. You have no idea what Dredg will sound like in the future, they don’t even know, and that to me is thrilling.

I don’t think it’s very innovative and genre-defying if you are just making your sound poppier. If Between the Buried and Me put out a dubstep album, I wouldn’t be like “Oh sweet! How innovative! Everyone else is doing that too!” I would be like, no, go back to making good music.

    • It doesn’t have anything to do with wanting them to copy themselves. It has to do with the massive departure in sound, so much so that they almost sound like a different band. The only reason you can tell it’s Dredg is because of Gavin’s distinct vocals. Catch Without Arms, while not as good as the first two, was still pretty damn fantastic. I love their soundtrack for Waterborne as well. But Parrot was a massive letdown, far too much personal indulgence to the point where it was downright boring. I’m all for bands doing stuff that makes them happy, but there comes a point where you have to make music that other people actually want to hear. And I know, there are a ton of fans of that album, but I know more than just a handful that were totally turned off by it.

And everything I’ve heard from this album sounds like Dan the Automator with Gavin singing. He’s manipulated their sound to the point where they don’t even sound like themselves anymore. A band shouldn’t allow a producer to do that to them, it strips them of their identity. The last album at least had somewhat of the Dredg vibe. Deftones, Thursday and Glassjaw are three bands that never repeat themselves and always come out with albums that sound completely different than the last, but unlike Dredg, they always SOUND like themselves. They don’t sound like self-indulgent drivel either. Considering how much I used to love this band however, two songs don’t tell the story and I’m still looking forward to hearing it in full. Here’s to hoping.

I gotta sound like a music snob now, but I am… so.. KamuiX: while your opinion sounds somewhat intelligent, dawg fuck your thoughts towards “The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion”. “I Don’t Know”, “Gathering Pebbles”, Mourning This Morning”, “Pariah”, “Light Switch”, “Savior”, “Ireland”, “Drunk Slide”, shiznit… all those tracks are the bomb pussy… and EVERY single other song on that CD and other album by Dredg. Phew…
But I have a feeling this may be their most undesirable.
& Jay.. Thanks for your words

    • Just an opinion, dawg! No one could have been more excited about that album than I was and I wanted to like it so bad, but after at least 15 listens from beginning to end, I gave up the ghost. I do like a few of the tracks (Gathering Pebbles, I Don’t Know, Mourning This Morning and the AWESOME Information and Drunk Slide, which should have been a friggin song), but as a whole, the album just didn’t do it for me. A lot of throwaway tracks for my money.

Rough, my man. Then I guess I can just hope it grows on ya like Sepultura’s “A-Lex”, The Mars Volta’s “Octahedron”, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s “T.H.U.G.S.” did for me!

Long days and vague clues is one of the best songs ever, I preordered the package deal and even if this album Is shitty, and I am scared it may be a little “out there” and not in a good way they made enough cool tunes to me to still give um a little money to help um out and I think they liked dans work so this is there dream come true album so hopefully the fun they had making it comes out in the music which leads to some of the best albums. Death comes alive by doomriders really shows if u have fun recording it then that feeling really boosts the album 10fold

there are no torrents yet, just sketchy sites where you have to fill out surveys and then supposedly get to download the album, so basically don’t try it,as of right now its bullshit, thanks allichs for getting my panties wet for nothing.

I think if this were a Gavin solo album, there wouldn’t be this much of an uproar. It does disappoint me on Dredg standards.

    • 1. Another Tribe.
This is Gavin and Dan the Automator, not dredg.

      2. Upon Returning.
Already said what I needed to say about this, though I admit it grew on me a bit.

      3. The Tent.
      dredg are Portishead.

      4. Somebody is Laughing.
      Laughing? No. Crying? Yes.

      5. Down Without a Fight
I actually like this song. Like, really like it. Holy shit! Kinda sounds like something that could be on The Horrors’ “Primary Colours” album.

      6. The Ornament
Easy listening. Not much to it besides Gavin and DtA, though that seems to be the recurring theme throughout the album. Maybe this should have been released as a solo album from Gavin as the rest of the band is quite sparse.

      7. The Thought of Losing You
      Still sounds like Interpol.

      8. Kalathat
      Skipped at 1:27

      9. Sun Goes Down
Wanted to like this song at the same time I wanted to hate it, though I’m not sure why.

      10. Where I’ll End Up
Back in the studio with better ideas for songs, hopefully.

      11. Before it Began
Anti-climactic ending for a pretty boring record.

Overall, not a complete dud, but there’s certainly nothing “awesome” about it either, Jay. I think you’re just blinded by their once-greatness and can not admit to them putting out a dud — it happens. 2/5 would be my rating if I had to make one. Probably 3-3.5/5 if it was released simply as a Gavin Hayes album. Also, this is the first album I have downloaded in years, simply because of my uncertainty. I will keep the pre-order for the album open in hopes that it all sort of “clicks” later.

    • Sure, downloading from P2P networks is safer than downloading from one click hosting services. Educate yourself bro. I haven’t felt the need to run µTorrent on my computer since August 2007.

Sorry homey but P2P is not safer, torrents have been the norm for years now. I don’t live in my parents basement and have to download porn or steal copies of windows 7, but I can understand your struggles.
There aren’t any torrents available yet, but you can snag it off Soulseek (the real soulseek, not the fake pay site).

I’m pretty sure allichs was being sarcastic about P2P, buttcrackguy. As everyone knows by now the “safest” way to download shit is by actually buying it. Is that going to stop us from the temptation of downloading things early? Probably not. I’m an advocate of file hosting websites, sure there’s a risk, just like with torrents. We’re all playing with fire anyways haha

That being said, I really wanted to like this album, but it’s going to take some time to grow on me, unlike their past output which I fell in love with immediately. It almost sounds as Chuckles would have been the next logical step had they stuck with Interscope for another record after Catch Without Arms.

I was beyond stoked when they became “free agents” after Catch. People bitch about Pariah being too self indulgent and pretentious, but damn it, a band of this caliber NEEDS complete freedom and control over their art.

It is truly exciting to be on this musical journey with the band as they grow and try new things, because we never know what to expect.
