Glassjaw – Coloring Book
A Major Label 2011
Let’s face it, fan outcry has practically become synonymous with Glassjaw in recent years. A much rumored acrimonious, and simultaneously protracted, departure from Warner Bros. Records saw new material from the group delayed to near “Chinese Democracy” proportions.
A series of extremely limited edition 7″ releases from the band were likely intended to ease concerns, but instead caused more uproar with many proclaiming them to be a nickel and dime tactic.
Eventually the material from the 7″ outings was compiled into a digital EP and most figured that would be the end of it until the now near-mythical (to the fanboys at least) new album from the group finally surfaced – that is of course until they decided to give away this, an all-new six song EP as a bonus to those who attended their early 2011 headlining tour.
Although many of the included tracks had been performed live prior, these studio recordings are easily the best representation of what Glassjaw have now become. For “Coloring Book” is a bold step forward, one that sees the band emerge from their scrappy, antagonistic post hardcore roots and blossom into a different beast altogether.
Much like the Deftones before them, Glassjaw now seem more intent on exploring musical texture, open space and sublime melancholy. The group achieve this through a number of haunting tones, subtle instrumental augmentation and oddly enough, a heavy dub influence manifested through the ever-intoxicating basslines of Manny Carrero.
To be sure Glassjaw are no longer the wounded animal that would aggressively lash out at every turn. Band frontman Daryl Palumbo readily illustrates this newfound zen with a highly melodic, almost scream-free performance. But as odd as it may be for a group who once thrived on chaos, it is this stability and focus that allows them to flourish and express themselves through a much broader range of color and influences.
Whether it be the shrill guitar tones that recall some of the more adventurous outfits of the early 80′s British pop movement (the solo on “Stations Of The New Cross” being a prime example.) Or the sonic entanglement wrought by the The Mars Volta on horse tranquilizers-like “Vanilla Poltergeist Snake“; “Coloring Book” exhibits the most expansive spectrum of musical experimentation from the band to date.
What really sets this EP apart from their previous work though is the depth of the songs. There’s been considerable thought invested in structuring and aural accentuation. Each fill, riff or haunting key embellishment all seems to have been planned out in great detail prior. Surprising it is then that the end result almost always maintains an organic flair flush with heartfelt sentiment, despite the more layered approach.
An impressive growth spurt that has seen them emerge more mature and capable than ever before, “Coloring Book” finds Glassjaw representing themselves with an impressively revised palette. One that looks fully equipped to help them paint an entirely new masterpiece altogether.

not what I thought it would sound like. so much better! album of the year 2011
The million dollar question?? Will this be released on CD, like at an actual record store???? I’m phoning HMV tomorrow morning!! I’m not into this downloading crap.
For sure lovin’ that dub influence. Must’ve been listening to Augustus Pablo for a bit.
I can hear Peter Tosh in there.
..and a touch of Bobby McFerrin.
could be GJ’s “Legende Du Scorpion a Quatre Queues” or “Megaton Shotblast”… wait why am I letting my human nature categorize and compare? I love this new GJ sound! 3 albums of this would do fine.

Hopefully they’ll sell this for a few bucks on their website after the tour. I’m laid up with a busted knee so cannot do anything, much less attend a concert for the next month or so.
Im reallllly happy with these new songs…..so fucking on point….thankfully i got my free cd at the show 2/16/11 Orlando FL……I got on stage during their opening song,it pissed Daryl off…..lol….you can view it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxXHgKZHrVU
…If that video gave you a laugh check out my stand up/cartoons/and music

fucking amazing
wheres people been getting this? anyone know where its at on line?
Just listen to it on youtube man. You must be very behind the times if you dont know where to find it so Im not even going to try and explain.
The new stuff is incredible. I love the direction they took on this EP. This is definitely their White Pony, only they have ditched the hardcore elements almost completely, while the Deftones still had heavy songs even on their mellowest outings. It’s just great after all this time to finally have new material to listen to. Hopefully we won’t have to wait another million years between this album and the next, but the future looks bright. Viva GlassJAw.
P.S. Blaze a blunt to the head before listening
@macaroons De Facto!!! Fuck yeah!!!! The seed from which The Mars Volta was born
@22 Acacia Ave You can only get the album their shows, they give it out after the concert, so download it, or go see GJ. I’m not sure you can buy it in the traditional fashion. There is word that this EP is a teaser to a forthcoming full length album to be released in the coming months. But in the world of GJ, one can never be certain
@ Surly. your link without a name. is that de facto, the At The Drive-In side project thing? never listened to that stuff, so I am unsure if this is a weird song or what. I am a huge ATDI fan. Is de facto worth (if this is that) worth my time?

@ JOHANNLUNA. just thought I’d share that since you shared daryl calling you an asshole. thats sweet!
Hey will, I assume it is. I just search on Youtube after Big Mac mentioned the above “Legende Du Scorpion a Quatre Queues”. I had never heard of these guys until now. Soo…yeah! Talk to the Mac-Attack.
*searched, rather.
Will and Surly, DeFacto is really good. Mostly instrumental and very much a link betweek ATDI and Mars Volta.
“De Facto was a dub reggae band which included Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Omar Rodríguez-López, Isaiah “Ikey” Owens and Jeremy Michael Ward.” – interesting, thanks for the tip _Natemare.
Hate listing to new shit on YouTube but I’ll have to check it out
I wouldn’t call it a “link”. Cedric played drums, Omar played bass, and the late J. Ward did misc. noise (I think Ikey still did organ). I figure while during one of their Ayahuasca/DMT/Psilocybin/LSD/Mescaline &/or LSA trips, they realiized thier vision which they must achieve as The Volta! But yeah, I own “Megaton Shotblast”, and maybe my next tax refund I could afford the $200 “Legende Du Scorpion a Quatre Queues” on CD. haha shiiit sure wish I could find the physical copy a BIT cheaper. I jus’ found “How Do You Dub? You Fight For Dub. You Plug Dub In” on amazon.com for $11, had to snag it.
I wish this would hurry up and leak already!
what do you mean by “leak already”? Coloring Book is already all over the internet since last week.
Mp3? I want it on my iPod and in my car.
PDXposeur it leaked as vinyl on the internet OMGZ!
Thank you piratebay.org
deftacto is cool when your heavily sedated. I don’t hear much of a ATDI/TMV link other than the loops that link some songs together.
Defacto bored me. I like omar and all, but hes not a genius.
^ Wrong, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez IS in fact a genius
I love TMV, but some people have a pretty loose definition of genius. Listen to ’70s King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra then listen to Omar’s slough of awful solo albums then come back and tell me that he’s a genius. I don’t think you’ll be able to.
Genius gets thrown around a lot, yeah. So does hilarious and awesome. Choose your words, people!

These guys have their 5 song EP for free on that site, the 2nd track is fucking amazing. Just a recomendation.
Omar dose have a boat load of bad solo albums… Old Money aint bad, Absence makes the heart…… is also a decent album.
@Frog… well said, King Crimson, Yes, Mahavishnu. Omar stole/was inspired by those sounds and arrangements, it’s quite obvious.
Defacto is boring, give me cool electronic music like the link I gave, hell even Pretty Lights is fun to listen to.
I own all of Omars solo albums and even some live bootlegs and he is in fact a genius. His collaboration with Lydia Lunch is amazing.
Even the 6 he just released 4 minutes ago?! Haha that fucker’s always comin’ out with new albums. Damn I’d love to have EVERY solo album by him.. Nice, Nate.
@Nate I’m with you man, I can’t get enough of the guy, Lydia Lunch collabo is awesome
Omar = genius. I back nate.
no screaming from Glassjaw? Is this possible? Even Chino still screams! wtf?
This cd is really good, got it at the Chicago show last night. Only wish I would have gotten to know it before they played it in it’s entirety.
It impresses me so much how tight and fine tuned everything sounded live. I’m listening to coloring book right now and I feel like I’m back watching them live again. A couple of my buddies were sad that they didnt play an old song to end their encore, but I thought it was brilliant. Let everyone know they’re getting the new EP for free, then bust out every track on it with no stops.
didn’t dig this…i was a big glassjaw fan but i think someone left the meatloaf in the oven too long. …let the ripping begin.
@posi kill: I totally agree, i used to be a big Glassjaw fan, Worship & Tribute was amazing. After listening to the Coloring Book ep, i’m not impressed. Very boring stuff. Well written, but… not glassjaw anymore. Nothing hype or aggressively emotional about it.
It’s called maturation. You can’t go around screaming “you fucking whore” your entire life. But true, not everyone will like this new direction.
i second tango. by worship and tribute it was clear that the misogyny had worn off and the screaming was being toned down. look at tracks like ‘must’ve run all day’ and ‘ape dos mil’ or going back further, ‘convectuoso’ or the b-side for w&t ‘oxycodone’. if you’re a glassjaw fan you shouldn’t be surprised by this.
@will,good viedo dude…….I met Justin Beck that same night after the show, dude was way nice funny. He asked me my name…said i looked just like the Johann from the Smurfs,he asked some random chicks to google it,he held the phone/picture next to my face and everyone got a good laugh.
The new cd is ok
Very mature album. I love it. I hope they disappear for another 10 years after this run and than come back even weirder.
it is a mature outing for them but… they completely neglected the backbone of what is Glassjaw in my opinion. Even the drums are mechanical and for a band built around pristine drumming this is very much a let down for any fan of musical technicalities. I was expectingn a lot more from them. I would be completely bored at watching them live again. I saw them with Deftones back during the White Pony tour and Glassjaw owned the stage at that time.
what the fuck are you on? a let down for any fan of musical technicality? listen to the syncopation in the drums on ‘gold’ or ‘stations of a new cross’. just because its not all dissonant and screaming doesn’t imply a lack of talent. better yet, find the drum and bass mix of worship and tribute out there on the internet and then come back and tell me this is mechanical. fucking a.
@livedefflo if you actually believe what you wrote, you musical knowledge is shit, this EP is some next level shit, something your pea-brain musical mind can’t comprehend. Durijah is the best drummer the band’s ever had. Even though parts of the drums are Justin Beck himself.
+1′s for stevo and jay. Took the words right out of my mouth.
I just wish they’d get Todd back. The last few times I saw them play without him it just wasn’t the same. The sound suffered terribly.
Ok, I’ve been following this band since “Siberian Kiss” was all over the internet back in late 1999…I was hooked by that song alone and could not wait to hear the full length. First time I saw them live was with Kittie at the Birch Hill Niteclub like 5 days after EYEWTKAS came out (5/9/00) Fast forward up to this point and I’ve seen them 19 times…jesus, that many!? Yeah, crazy right? Every single time I’ve seen them live Daryl always switches things up and never seizes to amaze me. A true artist. Very few have his ability to stand out from the pack. I just saw them last night at the Starland Ballroom in NJ and, like always, I had a lot of fun experiencing their sonic assault that only GJ can bring. Only downfall (to me) was that they only played one song off of EYEWTKAS and that was Siberian Kiss. Oh well. Now, on to the Coloring Book EP. I can honestly say that I like it a lot. It would’ve been perfect if one of the 6 tracks were an all out war, alas “You Think You’re John Fucking Lennon”. Overall, it’s very well written like Wookubus stated in the review. I would say go buy it, lol…but it’s being handed out for free at their shows for crying out loud. Pretty awesome if you ask me. So yeah, with that being said, I already can’t wait to hear the upcoming full length whenever they plan on releasing it… but hey just look at it this way. They’ve put out a full length’s worth of material between the Our Color Green and Coloring Book EP’s, right? So lets enjoy what they’ve given us and shut the fuck up about the past. It is what it is.
Lovin’ this album…
The Mars Volta on horse tranquilizers-like “Vanilla Poltergeist Snake“; every time I hear this song I think of that description. It is absolutely dead on exactly what it sounds like.
We just saw them live-so when did Glassjaw become a lounge act?I could of falling asleep to there new ep.Needless to say we are not fans of the new Glassjaw, doesn’t the singer already have another band that plays this kind of music why spread it to glassjaw.
@heavymetalcouple Way to make Glassjaw sound like Daryl and a bunch of other assholes. I’m sure Beck didn’t have any input on the writing process. It’s all Daryl trying to make all his groups sound the same. If you want an explanation for this new album, it’s maturity and drug use. The band is no longer the straight-edge angsty post-hardcore band they once were. I’m sorry, but you can’t go around screaming, “you fucking whore” for the rest of his life; you grow up. And no, you don’t have to like it, but don’t slap them right in the face by calling them a lounge act because you don’t get the music. That’s kind of ignorant.
I have been bumping this cd for the past week again…that’s funny how it’s in the ‘Top Headlines’ section too…
Why is this post No. 1 right now?!
