    • Vocals are abysmal. Mastodon used to be a force live. They singlehandedly dominated the Ozzfest they played. Then the band decided to let Brent start singing and now both singers can’t hack it live. This isn’t a one-off problem either, they were just as bad on the date I went to as well, and other random clips prove the same.

    • Leviathan or Blood Mountain, KB. There’s an interesting shift between these two consecutive records; most notably the change from harsher vocals to much cleaner sounding tones.

These guys are one of the bands I had to listen to their latest to actually get it. One of those bands I knew I ‘should’ like but just didn’t gel with them. I bought Crack the Skye on it’s release date because it co-incided with my payday that day, and my housemate & I at the time listened to it about 6 times in a row in my car in my driveway with a few packs of Leinenkugel. I was able to work backwards from there and appreciate each album in my own way.

    • @cma, I have to agree with you about Brent’s vocals. They’ve always sounded pretty bad live, and Sanders’ pipes seem weaker than they did 5 years ago. I’ve always viewed them as more of a studio band, though. In the studio, the combined riffage of Hinds/Dailor will always dominate.

@will. Blood Mountain is their best record, creatively and technically, IMO.
