Thomas Giles – Pulse
Metal Blade 2011
Undoubtedly skepticism will initially follow, “Pulse“, the latest solo album from Between The Buried And Me frontman Tommy Giles Rogers. His previous electro-laced outing, “Giles“, was certainly an acquired taste and a creative leap of faith that didn’t exactly sit well with many of his more metal-inclined audience.
In many ways “Giles” felt like the desire to scratch an entirely different itch while alleviating any perceived notions of artistic restraint. “Pulse” on the other hand at its core feels like a passion project. An engaging assembly of emotions and ideas stockpiled over the years as opposed to a rushed collection of songs thrown together in-between album cycles.
Easily the most charming element of “Pulse” that makes it noteworthy is its intrinsic lack of ego. All too often vanity seeps to the surface when a frontman steps out on his own. This is not the case here as the unifying factor to almost every song is an endearing sense of humility.
Aiding this is the organic, near folk-styled songwriting that serves as the foundation for the bulk of the album. This wholly vulnerable approach allows the varying degrees of electronic augmentation and stark haunting keys, etc. to possess far more power.
It’s a delicate balancing act that Rogers oversees with grace and fine attention to detail. Invitingly lush sonic expansion and elements of claustrophobic electroclash-styled ambiance struggle and maneuver for dominance but rarely come to blows. Sure the songs may possess a familiar plot when viewed side by side, but it’s the execution and subtle diverse twists that make them each stand out.
Of course Rogers isn’t entirely able to escape Between The Buried And Me and there are a few prime elements of metallic aggression present on this outing. To be blunt, “Pulse” isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel either as artists like Porcupine Tree have been perfecting a similar progressive hybrid for years.
That said, with “Pulse” Rogers has not only proven himself as a gifted songwriter, but in playing all of the instruments, an extremely talented musician as well.

Hm. I’ve never heard of this guy, but this sounds interesting. It’s on the “check it out” list.
I see 2011 as a banner year for Tommy and BTBAM. I’m hoping the new EP is 3 songs, an hour and a half long.
Hell yeah, I’ve been listening to this album nonstop for the past week. Though, if you are expecting BTBAM heavy, you won’t get it. Highlights of the album: Sleep Shake, Catch and Release, Scared, and Medic.
I love it. However… this has no business being on theprp. This is not even remotely metal or hard rock for that matter, except for Medic, which is my favorite track. I’ve always been a fan of this dude’s singing, and I always wished he did more of it on the BTBM albums, so if you like his voice then you will find a handful of really good songs. There is some ambient type filler, but it does flow with the rest of the album if you listen to it start to finish. This has been playing in my car non-stop during my commute for the last week and it’s probably going to stay there for a while. I gave it a 5.
ZOMG, who the fuck is this? Nobody would know this motherfucker if it wasn’t for Between the Buried and Me! Where the hell is my Avenged Sevenfold, Rob Zombie, and Korn reviews?!
/sarcasm
I second Kent Brockman’s sentiments. I will be paying cold hard cash for this outing come February 1st.
I also got the leak, and let me tell you, it’s freaking awesome. Tommy is clearly so talented so he needs some kind of output/release, and this is perfect, love the spacey sound to do, kind of reminds me a bit of hopesfall, old hopesfall
They’ve never really been my friends, just a common sense of self….
AMeN you bastard lol. I had no interest in this at all because it did not say BTBAM. Then I read you liken it to old Hopesfall and my tail began wagging out of control. gonna have to check it out.
Tommy Giles – great songwriter – been listening to this since I got my greasy mits on it…..
I am a big BTBAM fan. Colors and The Great Misdirect are masterpieces. This guys last solo album was…. well it wasn’t for me I guess. But this… THIS is tasty. It has a bit of everything… like a gay man at a penis buffet.
his first release giles is actually quite good if you want some chill music
Still trying to feel this out I get nodes of coldplay abvett brothers electronica bunch of off genres that come together for a nice listen 4-5
the best thing is you can’t put the record into a category. Catch & Release is dope!
Catch and Release makes me want to do the stanky leg… in a very good way.
There should be no limit to the ‘genres’ that are reviewed on this site. If not for this review, I wouldn’t have known the singer from BTBAM had a solo record. I think this site and its visitors should be open to more styles of music, rather then “give me riff, give me breakdown, give me Gold Cobra”
I finally got around to picking this up. What an album. All over the place, but flows very, very well. Guy’s got a great voice. “Sleep Shake” is one of my favourite tunes of the year for sure.
