Times Of Grace - The Hymn Of A Broken Man

Times Of Grace in many ways is the realization of a Killswitch Engage fans wet dream. A musical reunion of original KSE frontman Jesse Leach and the bands multi-talented lynchpin, Adam Dutkiewicz, the prospect of “The Hymn Of A Broken Man” sure sounds interesting on paper.

Written during, ahem, ‘times’ of turmoil and struggle while Leach battled his own demons and Dutkiewicz recuperated from debilitating injuries, there is a continual thread of desperate aggression and bleak faith running throughout the effort that gives it a discernable weight on a lyrical and emotional level.

As such it is a bit underwhelming then that the album tends to falter when it comes to individual diversity between songs and overall structuring. To be blunt, much of the material could have been easily shoehorned into a Killswitch Engage release.

Sure Leach takes a different stylistic approach than current KSE frontman Howard Jones; but the album itself doesn’t necessarily feel like a departure or sonic revelation for either of the principal parties involved.

Rather, much of it merely comes off as a slightly provoked blend of the brutish New England metalcore KSE helped to define earlier in their career mixed with atmospheric flourishes. Truly it’s not a great sign when an albums only twist comes in the form of an acoustically strummed ballad – In this case, “The Forgotten One“, a Bon Jovi-reminiscent number which itself is packs about as much glossy punch as a Stone Sour radio single.

Diehard KSE fans will have little to complain about and there are a handful of darker instances on this outing that may even throw them for a loop. But as a whole “The Hymn Of A Broken Man” feels far too compressed and familiar to establish Times Of Grace as their own entity; with songs often blurring into each other and only faint glimpses of unchecked emotion standing out.

    • 4/5. I don’t care if it’s not as heavy as what these two originally came up with, some of these tracks, dare I say, are beautiful. Leach’s voice is top notch, the riffing is top notch, the atmospheric elements are top notch. If you’re dumb enough to believe this will be KSE II or Alive or Just Breathing Pt 2, then you’ll be surely disappointed. If you remove the names of those who are involved, this is a very impressive album on its own and there are no instances where you want to skip to the next track, which is impressive as well given its a 53 minute album. I don’t know where people get this but outside of Adam’s riffing style and Jesse’s screaming, there really are no KSE b-sides on this album…it sounds like Times of Grace.

    • While once again I seem to not be agreeing with wookubus’ review, I’d say this record is a 3.5/5. It’s good, but ultimately for the most part it seems like most of it would be B-sides from Alive or Just Breathing. Still though, each track is infected with the obvious chemistry that these two guys have together, and overall it’s a pleasure to listen to.

    • I do not know what you listened to wookubus but this is one of the best albums of all time. Jesse and Adam are a perfect combo together and all of the tracks on this album fit perfectly. Hands down a 5 out of 5. They are not trying to be kse version 2 just times of grace and they do a damn good job at it. i think you shold do yourself a favor and stop trying to compare them to kse and listen to the band for what that are times of grace.

LOL This release is lucky it got a 2.5. This album is not one of the best albums of all time – Sideburnz… in fact I am sure you have only listened to maybe 3 albums EVER with that Statement. I am giving it a .5 so you clowns cant give it a 5.

Ya know, ive been a fan of this site for years, and always come here to check for news. I was compelled to actually create a login just to comment on this album. Wookubus, it seems to me you only give good reviews to grand, progressive, atmospheric metal like the ocean or intronaut, which is cool, just seems like that is what you like, so i dont think i can put weight into your reviews of anything like times of grace, which is a sound you just dont seem to care for…That being said, i just listened to the entire album, and yes, its a total AOJB fanboys great revival, (i may be guilty here) even if it sounds nothing like KSE. However, it is a pretty amazing album. There are some truly transcendant vocal parts, especually when the two are harmonizing, they sound great together. I think job well done to two guys who work well together, and im going to enjoy this one for a while….as well as the damned things, which you ripped apart too, which is so damned good.

    • Although i like this album and give it a 3.5, wook’s review is the brutal truth, it sounds like what KsE would sound like if Jesse never left, the songs mesh together, and when i first heard The Forgotten One, the first thing that came to mind was Corey Taylor and Bon Jovi, although i do like the song to some degree. One thing that i really like about the album is that there is much room for improvment which if they stick to it i think they can accomplish and actually seperate themselves from the KsE comparison. So everyone lay of wook, he is the Hank Moody of Metal.

    • I thoroughly enjoyed this record. Ground breaking? No. However, if you do enjoy Jesse’s singing style you will enjoy this record. As far as it being KsE, nah. Adam’s performance is great, remember he doesn’t claim to be a guitar virtuoso. He is a song writer/producer. Jesse’s performance is just as much Seemless and Empire Shall Fall as it is old KsE. The songs do bare a certain similarity to each other at times, but I feel like it is sort of on purpose as this is supposed to be somewhat of a concept album with ongoing themes. Maybe I’m biased because I am a big fan of Jesse Leach, but I really liked this record.

I see this album much like the latest Fear Factory album. Really solid, what you would expect from the folks involved.
Groundbreaking? No. But really solid. Am I sorry I bought it? No.
I also think that a bit of what appeals to me is the positive, spiritual lyrics. (something i’ve dug more as I grow older)
So, I’m sure most will “try-before-you-buy” but I feel that with all the crap thats put out these days it’s worth the buy.

    • Scotty,

I agree on the damned things as well. That record was very refreshing compared to all the bullshit that came out last year. Wookubus dropped the ball on that one too… must have had a shitty day when he popped that record in. lol

4/5 for me. I can’t stop listening to this record and it really makes a lot of other contemporary metal/hard rock bands/albums look even worse than they already are! Jesse and Adam really put their hearts into making this record and you can tell quite easily. While I think wookubus seems to have an under- appreciation for the album, I do agree somewhat with what he said. I don’t give it a 5 of 5 simply because when I had read interviews with Jesse Leach about the sound of the songs a few months back, it seemed like the album was going to exhibit some really different stuff with a bold amount of musical variation. So in that regard I feel like I didn’t get what I was looking forward to, but having said that, I feel like it’s a very well done record with at least some interesting new elements for these guys and it just came out great. They said the album was written without any preconceived expectations of selling or touring or pleasing others and I truly believe they made an honest, heartfelt record however the fuck they wanted to do it and they were successful in doing so. Gonna be playing it on repeat for at least a few weeks I’m sure.

This album was meant to appeal to fans of Alive or Just Breathing because it gives you a great taste of how great Killswitch Engage could be had Jesse not left. Its heart felt and genuine, both qualities of which KsE now lack in their music.

When I put this album in I was immediately taken back by how honest it was and how much I missed old Killswitch Engage.

My God, this album is so damn BORING. This record has been made time and time again, and it was boring five years ago. This is what I’ve gathered from the people who love this record…it sounds like KSE if Jesse never left, BUT you can’t compare it to KSE because it’s nothing like KSE. So which is it? Can’t be both. BORING.

    • Evidently you didn’t read my post then. This doesn’t sound much like KSE at all and I’m loving it partially because of that. As I said, it sounds like Times of Grace. You put KSE’s guitarist and guitar tone in a band with KSE’s original vocalist and it’s gonna draw comparisons. That said, they’re not valid comparisons as this sounds nothing like a KSE record. But tell me…who else made this album, let alone “time and time again”. I’d LOVE to hear another album in this vein.

3/5 I didn’t much like the newest Killswitch album. However, this new Times of Grace stuff is pretty good. I like the direction it’s headed for sure. The song writing is creative. Great vocals. I think they could dive a little deeper into a more original sound, hence the 3/5 rating from me.

    • This review is nothing but a smattering comparison to Alive or Just Breathing. Adam D. has a very distinct guitar style as does Jesse Leach to vocals, so yes, this album is going to have elements that are similar to the early KSE sound that they established. Comparing The Hymn of a Broken Man to Alive or Just Breathing is like saying Lennon or McCartney’s solo stuff sounds like The Beatles or Them Crooked Vultures sound like Queens of the Stone Age… no shit.

This album is fantastic. Can’t wait to see them in Cleveland on February 20th.

    • After giving it a better listen, I often mistake the songs for All That Remains tracks when I’ve got a full play list on shuffle. That’s not a knock, because I like ATR, but I think Adam should stick to KsE.
