The Damned Things – Ironiclast
Island/Def Jam 2010
Usually when so-called supergroups form there is a general point of reference or common thread between each participating member that instantly summarizes what to expect. Whether it be the grungy, sleazy rock of Velvet Revolver or the sun-baked psychedelics of Them Crooked Vultures, it rarely requires much imagination to guess what the material will sound like after seeing the roster involved.
This however is where The Damned Things stray from the norm. A motley crew that counts members of thrash legends Anthrax, former emo darlings Fall Out Boy and professional shit disturbers Every Time I Die within their ranks; there really isn’t an easy way to judge this outfit by the cover.
That isn’t saying that it won’t take more than a precusory listen of this outing to see where The Damned Things have their hearts though. If you boil it all down, the album seems to draw from three main elements – the crunchy radio friendly rock of the Foo Fighters, the catchy choruses and admittedly effeminate melodies of Fall Out Boy and a smattering of Thin Lizzy‘s soulful, smoky bar room rock.
It’s a farily loose presentation overall with a lot less guitar heroics than one would expect and a heavy emphasis on band frontman Keith Buckley‘s surprisingly restrained performance. In fact, it is perhaps Buckley‘s somewhat unintentional Dave Grohl impression that is the most surprising thing about The Damned Things.
Large choruses, harmonized ooh’s and ahh’s and little of the vigor that has made him so entertaining with Every Time I Die is present here. Unsurprisingly, the accompanying music tends to follow the same suit. While an occasional barbed riff snags the listeners attention, there’s a general sterility in place that stems directly from the overtly commercial aspirations of the project.
While everyone involved does seem to cut loose on their own now and then, more often than not it feels like Fall Out Boy‘s pedigree is the hidden hand guiding the project along with the rest onboard as hired guns. That said, there are a handful of engaging songs on “Ironiclast” and its lively spirit will surely strike a chord with those who possess less aggressive tastes.
It’s just hard not to feel like the bulk of syrupy choruses and lack of danger will leave most fans of Anthrax and Every Time I Die feel like a mid-thirties hesher at a high school prom.

I think this is a very accurate review, especially considering I enjoyed exactly 5 of the 10 songs. I tried to give it a fair shot, but the tracks that were heavy on the pop element were just intolerable.
Review fail, very solid record front-to-back. 4.5/5
Don’t quit your day job fellas.
I like it more every time I listen to it. I’m not one for poppy choruses, but these aren’t so bad. I was expecting a lot more because of 2 of the 3 bands involved, and I was let down, however… if you are expecting Every Time I Die or Anthrax, you aren’t going to get it, which is fine, I just accept it for what it is, and it’s a very solid album, as long as you make pretend you don’t who is in the band. I gave it a 4.
i will put a ETID patch on my jean jacket, go to the front and turn my back to them during the whole set. follow along everyone.
It’s not exactly heavy but it’s not shit either.
Although I expected better from the ranks of Anthrax & ETID.
Anything Scott Ian touches, with a few exceptions, turns to shit real fast. Just ask Billy Milano.
the album is okay, nothing more nothing less. now give me a new ETID record.
Haven’t listened to this, don’t plan on it, won’t be voting.
Just chiming in to say that voters should be allowed to vote half-stars too. If wook can, we should all be able to.
@adam – Just curious, did you give it a 4 or a 5? You feel this is 4.5, really? That’s pretty damn close to “the perfect album”. Forgive my skepticism.
I went with a 5, and I agree with your half-star vote comment. It’s 10 tracks that I enjoy – I’m sure they could’ve pushed an extra two tracks on this album easy, but they seemed to have made everything concise and didn’t want to add any pointless filler. I get the impression they put out a record everybody involved is truly proud of.
Another issue I have with the review is it does not discuss any individual track, good or bad. A much more favorable review at absolutepunk does just that, which I think better justifies their review score (with their community review sitting slightly higher) – http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=2018892
The amalgamation of different styles is pulled off perfectly hear. I really underestimated Buckley as a vocalist until I heard this. Sure, the vast majority of you probably hate the pop sensibilities of half of these choruses, but when it’s paired with rock the right way, it really catches my attention. As someone on Blabbermouth once mentioned, it sort of reminds me of 38 Special in the 80s. Also digging the Thin Lizzy vibe on the guitars throughout. Easily one of the more enjoyable albums beginning to end of the year. Zero filler on this. I have no problem giving this a 4/5, even if FOB are involved and it’s not even close to metal.
This is one of the best albums released this year. If you say “I hate it”, you are just trying to hard. Catchy and fun rock n roll.
@Element, If you say you hate it, you just hate it lain and simple. Its called matter of opinion and taste.
Anyways, after listening to this album a few times over, I would have to agree with the rating. Rather boring stuff at the end of the day. I got nothing from it. Now like someone else said, bring on a new ETID album.
This is good, fun rock and roll. Anyone expecting ETID…well, this isn’t ETID, and it was never advertised as such. That’s the same thing as buying an APC album and bitching it isn’t as heavy as Tool is. There are a number of musicians out there that like music outside of the genre their main band, and the ambitious ones form side projects that allow them that artistic outlet without pissing off their main band’s fan base.
Many people here are calling this album “catchy,” and that’s fine, I just don’t feel that way. I think their brand of “catchy” is better described as annoying. To be honest, I would be happy as shit if I never had to hear the chorus of Bad Blood ever again. I’m not against fun, catchy rock music. Shit, Weezer’s Pinkerton is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Iconoclast just doesn’t do much for me. It’s simply a matter of personal taste.
So, everyone who hates this and loves ETID, do you hate the song ‘The New Black’ as well cause to me the whole album sounds like that song. And I’m fine with that. Now Keith needs to finish up a Finale album.
@HonoluluBlueBalls kudos on the Pinkerton reference. One of my top 10 favorite albums ever.
KB’s not going back to Finale…haha…there’s a strong sense of irony in that statement. Wow, I am so clever.
Yeah, I heard he was done with Finale but a man can still dream.
It’s too poppy for my taste.
I’m feeling the Damned buzz……it is catchy and it breaks up the shitty metal that sometimes creeps up on me.
“While an occasional barbed riff snags the listeners attention, there’s a general sterility in place that stems directly from the overtly commercial aspirations of the project.” Exactly what I thought. Keith is just more clever than this record lets off. He had to have dumbed himself down a bit to make this. I don’t mind that it isn’t very heavy, and it is essentially radio rock, but c’mon that doesn’t mean it has to be so cliche. 2.5 is entirely accurate in my opinion, good review.
while hanging with a close friend and fellow prp-er the other day he played this for me as we ps3ed it up. it grew on me, poppy (yes), riffing (not etid), but I am removing my foot from my mouth because it is not bad. the vocals via KB grew on myself and when you think a song could get boring it ended. very punk in length. not the heavy I want but no slow jams either, just quick & dirty like your mom.
I agree with American_Natemare’s reference to “The New Black” by ETID, basically taking that and making it a band.. I’d also maybe toss in ETID’s “INRIhab” as well..
Love this record. Solid, I don’t see Foo Fighters here unless Wook is referencing the first s/t album by the Foos.. In that case any band is welcome to pull from that record as much as they want.. s/t foo fighters was awesome.
There are some bad-ass songs on this record.
I didnt think the album was too bad. Considering what’s going on right now with new releases, not a whole lot. Glassjaw is taking FOREVER, new Anthrax is taking FOREVER, Finch is toast(RIP Finch – one of the biggest losses in music), Thursday is still in the studio(thank god we still have Thursday around). Looking at the new release schedule on here, the only thing half decent coming in Times Of Grace.
I think the new Underoath and 36 Crazyfists albums are amazing, but they’re starting to wear off. So this Damned Things albums, especially around Christmas time, gives me something to check out.
5/5 on this end.. love the album, love the colaboration, love the live performance on jimmy kimmel.. well rounded and a chance well taken.
The more I listen to it, the more I love it. I’m hoping every other year will be a TDT/ETID record rotation.
I like this cd. No way is it 5/5. It’s cool catchy rock and roll that is radio friendly but acually has so credibility to it’s name unlike all the other stuff on the radio. Don’t compare it to etid, compare it to the stuff you would like to realisiticly hear on the radio and it is a solid 4.5 on that stance. As an album on my iPod I go 3. Hope they follow it up soon.
While it’s not the heaviest shit to hit shelves this year, giving Ironclast he same rating as Avenged Sevenfold’s newest record is insulting. Regardless of what you think it should be or want it to be, these cats put out a record that’s well recorded, well thought out, fun, and catchy as balls. It’s not supposed to be a representation of any of the member’s previous efforts. Trohman is actually a huge metal head, and anyone who’s heard Hurleys previous stuff would know he’s no slouch either (Racetraitor, Burning Empires). Poppy or not, I can listen to this shit all day.
