You don’t get any more metalcore than “The Powerless Rise.” First runner up goes to “Shattering The Skies Above.” The trend is dying. Putting this garbage out now would have been like releasing a rap metal album in 2002.
“Hey there folks. There’s a little word we just love here at the As I Lay Dying metalcore factory; it’s called ‘reliability’. Yessir, you can count on us to keep churning out the same sounding shit since Frail Words Collapse!”
Well I’m gonna put my foot out on the tracks here and hope you guys don’t run me over too quickly. Although I hated their first album, and I mean I still truly despise it….their most recent album was pretty decent and based on the tiny 5 second snippets we hear this sounds pretty decent too.
So you know how most of you guys are kind of romantically looking back on Limp Bizkit right now?…..let’s give it a couple more years for the next trend to come up and you’ll be romantically looking back on this too.
Why can’t everyone just forget the stupid fucking labels everyone puts on it and just listen to it and let it sink into your brain for just a second before we get all fucking judgmental without even really hearing it. Unless we’re talking about Limp Bizkit of course cuz they do indeed manufacture the same mindless crap every time!
Fair enough BOM. Look, I can’t help myself from a biting parody. Hehe. But you’ve gotta admit there’s not a lot of ‘character’ separating the sound of each As I Lay Dying. Sure, these guys are professional musicians, who have been refining their craft now for many years. However, there’s really nothing ‘special’ or ‘fresh’ to what they’re doing. Take Misery Signals, for example. Sure, they incorporate more of a ‘progressive’ bent to their sound, but they continually push the envelope in terms of arrangements, style and production techniques and values in essentially the same scene.
I will say, most complain about a band that changes from album to album.. there are some bands which I thoroughly enjoy and desire them to keep making music within that realm. Maybe make minor adjustments, etc. For example, Slipknot’s first two albums… solid… then they took upon change and it didn’t help Corey went to Stone Sour and came back. Their 3rd cd was very different, for God sakes it had an acoustic song… not cool! As I Lay Dying can keep doing what they do best imo. Also, don’t judge them on their new album before it hits! new snippet sounded pretty good! (one on their myspace)
I’ve just never gotten into this genre of music. As I Lay Dying, Trivium, God Forbid, Killswitch, Shadows Fall, Unearth, etc… It’s corny to me. Sure, each of those bands have a couple songs I can stomach, but it’s very monotonous to me. It’s the same guitar riffs, same scream-to-clean vocals, blah blah blah. I’m not doubting the musical talents of these bands, I just wish they would put it to better use. But then again I still listen to old school Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, and Anthrax all day so what do I know.
you fucking fucks fucking hate on fucking everything
Well now, I feel truly rebuked. Please forgive me for even thinking of ‘hating’. I am now a changed man.
@ buttcrackguy – I feel you there man, I’m waaay into all the old school stuff you mentioned too, but when it comes to metalcore and such, I would definitely not include Shadows Fall. Their roots lie with your favorite bands, they bear zero resemblance to metalcore, and I believe the only reason they’re lumped in with that scene is where they’re from (Mass, metalcore country). Trivium, similar story. Old school influences. You don’t have to love it, but give it another listen.
While I disagree with AILD philosophically, their music is legit and they’ve grown very much in their live shows. I saw them back in…. 2006 (maybe?) and again in 2008 and they were much improved. I dig all their albums, looking forward to this one.
I’d put Shadows Fall above all of those bands I mentioned, I like everything they’ve done up to War Within, the last couple albums just didn’t take with me. Brian Fair’s vocals really grind away at me after a while, I wish he would change it up a little more, he’s very one dimensional.
