Tool’s latest newsletter reveals that initial writing sessions are underway for the bands next album.
An excerpt from the newsletter can be found below:
“Members of the band are still in the process of writing new material (three days a week), and with the latest leg of the “Puscifer” tour nearing completion, it shouldn’t be long before the dry-erase board is filled with a bewildering array of color-coded intros, progressions, agitatos, con sordinos, crescendos, diatonics, inversions, resolutions, transitions, variations, obbligatos, consonance, and endings – the arrangements that millions will attempt to down-load off the internet.”

Oh man…I’m beyond stoked. Those are some interesting choices of wording, haha. Sounds very much like something Maynard would say…
best new of the week!!
Best post ever!!!!
Alright, sweet. Gotta love those obbligatos…
Great news indeed even though I now feel dumb.
I was a music major and have no idea as to what a con sordino or agitato is.
has anybody actually read the whole newsletter? hilarious.
but: now, they should stop smoking crack and get the job done. thanks.
Erection day!
Tool hasn’t made a good record since their last one.
I sure hope it has more godsmack riffs and chanting
@9 Ounce – *rollerskates of laughter*
Personally I didn’t like 10k Days. I thought it was fairly boring, and repeatitive. I think they really hit their peak with Aenima, since then I think all the other projects have cause Tool to really lose relevance.
I’m with Aries. Tool started to bore me a little after Aenima. Every song doesn’t need a 3 minute intro of ambient noise. The first few Tool albums were great because they got right into action, kicked some ass, then moved on to the next song. I do enjoy Tool, just not like I used to. I saw them in Vegas 3 years ago and it was putting me to sleep. When I saw them at Lollapalooza years ago, they fucked the place up. Tool is the most self indulgent band out there. I just prefer the radio edits of their songs.
i owe so much to this band, they changed the way i heard and experienced music…i cannot express my excitement for a new album except FUCK YES!
I want an entire album full of Gregorian monk chanting, djembe patting and looped recipes spoken in German.
Surly, I want that and a bonus disc of 72 minutes of “intermission”

My favorite band. Aries Veil and BCG you’re two of my favorite people at THEPRP.COM but nothing Tool has done can be called boring or repetitive. Lateralus and 10K days are incredible albums. Jambi, Rosetta Stoned, Wings For Marie/10k Days on 10k Days is some of the best shit they’ve ever done. The Grudge, Lateralus are ridiculous. The triptych of Disposition, Reflection, and Triad is a fucking beast of a piece of music. Maybe my obsession with the band is blinding me a bit, but I doubt it. I can’t wait until the album comes out.
Don’t get me wrong, I love every Tool song, it’s just every song seems to have to have this drawn out lead in that I could do without. When I saw them a few years ago, the show started off with about 15 minutes of quiet noise while Maynard sat there meditating, and all these people at the show started doing it too, and it was very cult-like and not very rockin’ out-like. Then every song had the same long intro and the flow was just not there. It did however make it very easy to make trips for beers though, because I knew I wasn’t going to be missing anything.
@Surly, So basically you want to ‘This is War’ by 30 Seconds to Mars then?
@jayofdajungle, dude i’m not hating on Tool at all, and I did buy Lateralus and 10k Days. Much like every Tool album, they really need to grow on me, I can’t just throw it on and get floored by it. I compare them to The Mars Volta in so much as they require a lot of listens to really get. I probably listened to Lateralus for a year, off and on, before I really felt it was a strong album. They fact of the matter is, and I think EVERYONE will agree. Aenima and Undertow are far more accessible and listenable albums than Lateralus and 10k Days. You can throw the first 2 albums on anytime, and they flow much better, because they aren’t all 8-10 minutes long per song. I am a fan of post hardcore, I am enjoying the new ISIS, and The Ocean records, and they are totally on the same trip as Tool’s latest albums, but the difference is that Maynard is 10x the vocalist. I will check this album out, but I don’t expect much in terms of surpassing what was done on 10k Days. I expect a lot of the same actually. Which in Tool’s case, is what works for them, and the majority of their ‘cult like following’.
@Johnny – Oh no, that’s just Disc 2! The bonus disc is an extended version of LAMC/Maynard’s Dick. Cannot wait.
@Aries – Jared Leto is so dreamy. Just a single note of his angelic voice gives me a boner. This site DOES NOT cover enough 30 Seconds to Mars. Where is the review for ‘This is War’ damnit!? Yeah, exactly. Where indeed everyone. Does Wook even realise that is a serious AOTY contender! NO! So narrow minded. Gosh…Why do I even bother. I do not know.
I agree, when Leto dyed the mohawk pink, I almost spontaneously dropped a load right then and there. The guy is like a modern day John Lennon, just without the icky Yoko Ono. You know what, I think we should start petitioning wook on theprp board for an entire section devoted to Jared Leto and 30STM. With cute pictures, and antecdotes, and blogs, and pictures of kittens. You know, all the stuff guys like us adore!
The only problem 10k Days had was it seemed to have more filler songs that weren’t actually songs. The key word here is “seemed.” Tool has had, in the past…filler “songs” on their albums. “Die Eier Von Satan,” “Faaip De Oiad,” whatever. The problem with 10k Days is that these filler songs were not spaced out in between songs like the other ones, so it kind of grated on peoples nerves a bit. All in all, I cannot wait for the new Tool album…because despite some flaws they may have, no one can ever argue the fact that they are one of the most talented and influential bands this world has ever seen. Some are put off by their songs because they run on too long, which I understand.
listening to tool is far beyond listening to a normal rockband. they are one of my favourite bands and every album leaves me euphoric.
i cant understand how people say that they include “fillers” or moan about them leaving normal rock structures behind. broaden your horizon, guys. or just listen to something else. the spheric, and partially even epic atmosphere of lateralus and 10k are not reached by any band on this planet. their albums come as one. they include a spiritual guideline, a certain theme. melodies and rhythms are often ass-kickingly intricate, but still very subliminal. they make dream theater look like a 80´s hair-metal band, imho.
@El Caco, So tell me, how great does Maynards cock taste?
@aries veil, without question those albums are far more accessible, and I love those albums. To tell you the truth it did take me a while to warm up to those albums. I did listen to those albums hundreds and hundreds of times being that I was in a band which felt it neccesary to learn every song that Tool has ever made, to the point where when a Tool album was released that’s all we played, obviously our original work suffered accordingly, but it was fun nonetheless, and gave me an extensive for lack of a better term “knowledge” of the later Tool albums as well as the early ones. Maybe I’ll upload a couple tracks of Tool songs we recorded and an original or two if I can dig it up, even though the singer (myself) will more than likely be labeled a blasphemer for attempting to sing Tool
@Aries Veil: yeah, one can tell that i’m a fan. still, no album has let me down yet.
by the way, fuck you.
Oh man… Very awesome news. Hope its not a Lateralus part 3 though.
whoa, why we talking about tasting cock and dropping a load for jared leto’s pink mohawk???? This is fucking tool people!!!! Hopefully they dipped themselves in a tank of pure LSD for this one, and plus like El Caco was sayin about those fillers, it was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and probably pertained mainly to themselves because they all have this crazy other world in their heads and they have some sort of inside thing going on each album so its all ‘mysterious’ and people listen to some of them going WTF? But its really trying to dig deeper into your subconscious and pull out something that makes you go ‘duuuuudddeeeee, trippy’ Or maybe they dont mean anything at all and thats what the madness of Tool does. We are all tools. Can’t wait to hear it! And for the record-maynard is a dick- He sells wine from his vineyard here in my hometown. Cool guy in terms of music/art, but just a dick.
Maynard is an asshole, a dude I know went to his vineyard or whatever the fuck and ran into him in the bar, while he was polite, he asked Maynard to take a picture with him and he was like no, just remember this moment in your head or some shit, kinda funny now that I think about it. Danny Carey also used to only sign with a purple sharpie, and Adam Jones literally ran away from us one time, All true stories, how mysterious… Still my favorite band ever
@El Caco, oh come on now, no need to get all testy. Remember, only you can prevent forest fires.
Eh, I’m the type who could care less how they are on a personal level with people who are obsessed with their music. They’re human beings too man. At this stage in their lives they’re prolly the most jaded dudes on the planet. Plus, they’re not the type of dudes who are comfortable with being put on such a high pedestal by their fans…I mean really…even if you do get a picture with Maynard or Adam…what are you gonna do? put it on your wall and wack off to it? I mean really? or when your friends come over you go “yo duuuuude, i met and got a pic with my favorite rock god to ever grace the planet”…lol, who gives a shit. I mean yea of course it’s cool to have something like that, but if it doesnt happen, don’t be a whiny bitch about it. Grow a pair. It’s Tool for crying out loud…that’s good enough.
You really can’t blame them for being standoff-ish / dicks/ whatever. We’re surrounded by weird fucking creatures on this planet and that’s the reality of it.
@Anadivine….you’re an amazing human specimen. you took the words right out of my mouth…goddamn, hah.
LOL@Ana – Aries and I are talking about these things because Jared Leto is a boner on a stick. Gosh….how could you even ask that sort of a question. Very self explanatory. Anyway, I’m more interested in when you and stuckpig are gonna get your cyber groove awwwwnnnnnnnnnn! OH YEAH!
@Surly, Haha, I want a front row for that upcoming boner time!!
I love drone shit and ambience, but Tool over did it this past album. Yes, I can’t believe I said it. I love this band, but I stand by more word. Less filler, more killer. I know someone is going to make a Sum 41 comment so I’ll beat them to the punch.
