The Dillinger Escape Plan – Option Paralysis

Party Smasher Inc. / Season Of Mist 2010

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis

Clearly to begin to appreciate “Option Paralysis” one must better understand the situations that helped to shape it. For years The Dillinger Escape Plan have fought tooth and nail to earn their stripes and while widely praised by the press, their peers (including Trent Reznor and Mike Patton) and the fans at large, they are routinely outsold by the bands that originally opened for them.

Given these unfortunate events, it isn’t surprising that after years spent on the cusp of breaking out, the group have finally taken matters into their own hands. Leaving behind the confines of their longtime label home Relapse Records to forge ahead on their own, these New Jersey natives launched Party Smasher Inc. – a new venture for all things Dillinger.

In essence this sense of independence, or “doing it live” as band frontman Greg Puciato would likely say, sums up the spirit of “Option Paralysis“. Much of the album possesses a sneering ‘us against the world’ mentality and while the bands antagonistic tendencies have certainly been well documented, “Option Paralysis” feels like the ‘gloves off’ moment. Perhaps more so than on their recent outings, they visit the snarl and relentless pummel of their earlier days.

The majority of the songs featured here contain complex, mind-numbing arrangements that vigorously push the groups instrumental dexterity and songwriting ability to the limit. And yet despite the abundance of aggression they are still able to strike a stylish balance with their ever nascent melodic aspects; making for what may just be their most polished, albeit somewhat domesticated release to date.

Piano and electronic manipulation continue to play their part in helping to expand the bands sound and jazz-oriented freakouts are used to full effect. Oddly though it isn’t the ferocity on this release that stands out the most. Instead it is the moments where they opt for a more accessible nature, such as the triumphant Nine Inch Nails meets Faith No More closing track, “Parasitic Twins“, where their innovation is fully exhibited.

In fact, at this stage of the game there seems to be more passion and expressionism invested in the bands relaxed moments than their now trademarked aural blitzkriegs. That said, while “Option Paralysis” is certainly one of the most developed albums of their career, it falls just short of being their most inspiring. The group have already pushed themselves so far in the past that the wow factor of just what they are capable of seems to be starting to fade.

Of course most of the material is strong and intriguing and the tension of their warring emotional extremes remains ever intoxicating. But it’s not quite the quantum leap that most were likely expecting. Even so, when you’re as talented as this outfit is, refinement instead of reinvention is by no means a bad option to exercise.

I tried. This is the same as every other DEP album. They bring nothing new to the table with this one. Just like with every other album of theirs, I find 3 good songs, and 8-10 songs that sound EXACTLY like the others. If you like DEP, this is for you, but you’re not going to find anything different than the last 3 albums.

Maybe your head (and ears) are up your buttcrack, guy, (really? the same as the last three albums? You sure you just didn’t play Miss Machine three times over the course of five years?) but good on you for giving it a try, for me – fucking great to hear some fresh DEP – fucking marvellous!!

Good album, but pretty much the same as their last album. These guys dont’ really need to fuck with what’s working though. Impressive song structures though, as always. I also give it a 4 out of 5.

    • Very good album but it only has 10 songs…sounds short..it makes you want more. I dont’ agree that it sounds the same as their other albums.”Gold Teeth On A Bum”, “Widower”, “I Wouldn’t If You Didn’t”, “Parasitic Twins” introduce a new ambient with great symphonic arrangements..classics. Though, the tracks “Good Neighbor”, “Crystal Morning” and “Endless Endings” dont add nothing new..sound the same has other songs they have…”Farewell, Mona Lisa”, “Room Full Of Eyes”, “Chinese Whispers” sound like old Dillinger alright, but they’re very good songs too.
For everyone that likes Dillinger, it’s a must have.

    • This is MUCH different from the last albums if you know what you’re listening to. This is just a perfect solid album from start to finish. Ire Works was damn good too but this is definitely a step up from there. Fans of DEP will be very satisfied, others just won’t get it I guess.

When I was a kid we combined words like dude and radical into dudical, kinda deuce-chilly, the new album’s awesome BTW, so many leaks so little time

    • Not sure DEP went into all of this thinking that Option Paralysis would be their ‘break out’ record, but hey… – I like what I’ve heard so far. More of the same isn’t necessarily a bad thing, right? Umm..hmm.

They def stuck to a signature sound that’s been steadily developing since Miss Machine, but in Mona Lisa Smile alone they touch on some unfamiliar territory. I am having a hard time finding a reason not to give this album 4 out of 5. Can’t wait to buy it and listen to it repeatedly. I’m listening to it on their myspace right now. My mind = blown.

    • I really like this record after a few listens. A more consistent listen in comparison to Ire Works, which incidentally had some incredible highs but some crappy, experimental lows.

What type of quantum leap were you expecting? They’re playing strings in front of mics, stepping further on the jazz experiments.. heavy and delicate. AND keeping it so real throughout.

    • robkay he said that the WOW factor has started to fade with these guys, hes kinda right… I mean miss machine was a slap in the face of awesomeness and
inventing their own genre pretty much, who else could get away with a song like baby’s first coffin… but yeah they are still kickin ass

    • I think this is their best record so far. It has a LOT to offer…pretty much a little bit of everything that DEP is capable of pulling off without it sounding dull. Amazing band…

Only album I own by DEP is Calculating Infinity…which is just one hell of an amazing album. Apparently Ire Works was too, I will have to give that one a listen sometime.

    • This is definitely my favorite dillinger album, followed by calculating and miss machine, wasn’t a massive fan of ire but got it none the less. I can listen to this start to finish without skipping any tracks, which is a pretty amazing feat because I am picky as hell.

Great album. The opening track is killer. That slow clean part in the middle is fucking awesome. Then ending the song in total chaos… Great song writing.

    • The best songs and parts are the ones that basically sound like a heavier Faith No More. Their “tech” side has gotten to be really redundant and boring. Every one of those staccato, dissonant riffs all sounds exactly the same now. They seem to be doing more original and interesting things with the more traditional heavy rock format.

    • Ben Weinman is pure genious and this record is a result of that. Every album has it’s own feel and has constantly managed to push the envelope of what music is and can be. This album manages to ignite all the same emotions a dillinger album has never failed to ignite in the past. Some people say this sounds like everything else they’ve done….and so what. 4/5 easily.

    • well, the thing is that dillinger is that kind of band that started with awesome albums and considering miss machine as their opus magnum (for me) it’s not easy at all to write fresh, new albums. Ire Works introduced us to a bit more progressive face of the band, which was cool. However, tracks more rooted in their math history were… ekhm… repetitive?
And the worse part in case of option paralysis is that the album is even more repetitive in case of ideas and generally less suprising.
Nevertheless, option paralysis is fu**ing great album, I was listening to it constant in the past few weeks. Gives me goose bumps, especially during the Widower and Parasitic Twin (which is a bit pattonish with nin elements ;) )
In conclusion, the fact is that dillinger won’t record bad album. It’s just impossible. But, what I expect from the band like that (mythmakers, historical, amazing) is something suprising, something that would keep them fresh. As for the album itself it’s for sure 4/5, however taking above things under consideration I would rather say 3/5.
      Cheers.

    • i personally think Dillinger just keeps getting better and better. which probably pisses off the “old hardcore fans”. this band has really evolved thanks to mike patton and greg puciato. from miss machine and on. i personally like the songs more when it’s not screaming constantly, don’t get me wrong, i love music that’s nothing but screaming. but greg can really sing. it shows on songs such as farewell mona lisa, gold teeth on a bum, widower and parasitic.

before the album came out they made an announcement saying they will have a very special guest. i was hoping so badly that it was going to be trent reznor. obviously greg like good music, fuckin patton and nin. and then he had the once in a life time opportunity to perform wish and mr. self destruct with trent and co on their last tour.

oops, about dillinger. is you weren’t much into their older stuff, give this one a try. if all you like is screaming, you’ll enjoy parts of the album. if you’re actually an open minded individual, you should love this, no gurantees. and if you’re not a thief and support artists, buy it. or better yet, buy the orgasmic box set from the label season of mist. it’s quite pricey. but that is absolutely the coolest box set i have ever seen. hands down.

and then, go see em live. absolutely amazing. maybe not if you’ve had seizures in the past, might not be your best bet. 5/5

    • Stenny… the new drummer is fast and complex as Chris Pennie(calculating infinity, miss machine, irony is a dead scene) and hits hard like Gill Sharone (Ire Works). He has the best of both worlds and can rip pretty hard on those double kicks.

Burialsuit…Greg’s voice can be annoying at times like a winy 40 year bitch but he brings melodies and singing to the table along with a side order of screams. Dimitri whom I think is an amazing “screaming” singer cannot provide those actions.

I give this album a 5 for experimental use and moving forward.

love this cd havent ever really gotten into them before this but now i am a fan, i feel like a traitior for saying this sense i hate avenge 7fold or whatever that band is but his vocals can somepoints sound like that dudes after his voice got thrown out. but he definitly has some mike pattonesk low parts that are f@#king sick. id definitly give it 4.5 stars out of 5 cause the songs dont really flow that well gold teeth widower and parasidic twins really shine bright around the other tracks just cause there soo good. but every song kicks ass and each one grows on u more with each lisen!

This is my favorite Dillinger cd, I disagree with the claim that it sounds like the other CDs cause ire works was much more experimental then this one, there are no sick on Sunday type songs on here, all the world needs now is a DEP/converge tour haha
