Avenged Sevenfold Recruit Dream Theater Drummer For New Album

Avenged Sevenfold have tapped Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy to handle the drumming duties in the studio for their next album. The band issued the following statement on the matter:

“..I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it’s our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy‘s all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him.

Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev‘s abilities. Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create.

He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy.

    • @Geetarz – Mike won’t help. Avenged Sevenfold is one of those bands that just oozes with talent but it gets in the way of writing good music. They force technical parts into songs to show off their talent instead of worrying what’s best for the song.

These guys are too busy crafting every song into something radio ready, they are like Linkin Park with an edge. I can listen to Waking The Fallen, but everything after was made for 15 year old high school chicks.

    • Brutal crowd here. Mike’s presence won’t change a thing. The album’s already written and I’m sure they just wanted to bring in someone who could imitate the feel The Rev had…and well, naturally Portnoy can do it. But yeah, they’ve never written 2 records that are alike and you need to pay more attention if you think the music’s made for high school chicks. There aren’t 2 songs on the new album that sound even remotely the same. Few bands, particularly ones that actually know how to write a song, can pull something like that off and have the album not be a mess. There’s a reason Portnoy’s doing this…evidently he sees something in band the vast majority of you don’t.

    • A lot of people think that musicians are only for the money
while some are but im a musican and I do it for the music. Mike is covering for Jimmy because he adored the love for Mikes drumming. For that I thank you aha. I know fer sure this band wont disappoint on there new album.

That’s just the knock though, that album was a mess because it was so unfocused. That’s what happens when you step in as producer with zero experience.

    • This album will be great, probably even better with Portnoy laying down drum tracks. The previous record blew, but that’s what happens when you let an inexperienced band produce their own album. Anyone that disses “CIty Of Evil” obviously has clouded judgement by what they saw on MTV (i.e. Bat Country) – speaking of which, why the hell were you watching MTV to begin with?
