The Red Chord - Fed Through The Teeth Machine

Sure naming their album after a phrase heard on the TV show “HowStuffWorks” doesn’t exactly conjure the same disturbing imagery as 2007′s “Prey For Eyes” – an effort whose title was culled from the rantings of a mentally disturbed prison inmate. But at this point in The Red Chord‘s career, shock value isn’t a necessity, creative growth is.

Already seen as unwitting progenitors of the ‘deathcore’ movement, the band have made the bold decision to continue on as a quartet following the departure of their guitarist Mike Keller, seemingly putting them at a large disadvantage in a scene where having two shredders is law. The thing is, if anything this weakness actually turns out to be a strength by the albums end.

While remaining guitarist Mike ‘Gunface’ McKenzie certainly goes the extra mile to beef up his presence, the overall scaled down sonic attack allots the other members of the band a larger focus. Sadly though, this may be the boldest move The Red Chord make on “Fed Through The Teeth Machine“. For while they have certainly embedded elements of thrash, grind and various other metallic shrapnel within their sound, the songs themselves aren’t exactly revolutionary, nor identifiable.

This isn’t entirely their fault, though their inability to outgrow the confines of the genre which they inhabit is depressing. Sure they poke and prod here and there and these faint moments of freedom are what truly deserve mention. It’s just that the now standardized tornado of percussive cacophony and serrated guitars eventually becomes an albatross for the band, smothering the songs with repetition and predictability.

Factor in that the clever lyrics are often unintelligible and the deck gets stacked against them even more. Unquestionably, the recent influx of groups following in their footsteps have stolen a lot The Red Chord‘s thunder. Thus it is only when the band show nuance and actual dynamic that “Fed Through The Teeth Machine” commands attention, such as the plodding build-up on “Mouthful Of Precious Stones“.

That said, while not immediately noticeable, repeated listens reveal that many of the tracks possess an almost uniform song structure of full throttle face melting and a careening chorus followed a sustained bridge that leads to the songs end. The brevity of the tracks, which all nearly clock in at under 3 minutes, does alleviate this. But once the listener is able to penetrate the harsh discordance and see through the initial velocity, the album’s shortcomings come into full view.

Undoubtedly “Fed Through The Teeth Machine” lives up to its title and readily decimates the listener with near sadist intent. But a genre, let alone cornerstone album for the bands discography, it is sadly not.

    • Although I can’t disagree with the review or the score, I don’t think just because there are a lot of other acts playing this game right now that this one in particular is to be held to higher threshold just because they have been around longer. Run on sentence for teh win?
This is my favorite album since their debut. I didn’t find anything memorable on Clients; in fact its hard to comment on it at all due to the latter. Prey for Eyes was better then clients but didn’t match up to it.
I think my lack of excitment for this release is more due to my own aging and morosity then any fault of the musicians themselves to push the envelope.
Thanks to the internet we found all these bands; and they us. Thanks to the Internet we’ve all watered down the genre. It’s a catch22.

    • See, and I totally disagree with solipsism.

I have been a fan of this band since the debut ‘Fused…’ and honestly I was more impressed with ‘Clients’ than any of their other releases. I think the songs had more structure, the dirty production played to the bands strong suits, which are Guy’s vocal inflection, delivery, and lyrics, and the death/tech/hardcore guitar riffs. I found ‘Prey for Eyes’ to be forced in terms of song directions, and sometimes it came up sounds somewhat redundent. Where as ‘Clients’ was very strong in terms of song structure and listen-ability. The songs were more falling towards metal/hardcore than deathcore/tech.

I love this band, if only for the fact that they are truly unique in this genre, and they were originators in this style. However, I find that they once again seem to force out these whirlwind tracks, that seem to blend together after a while, it’s too bad they can’t focus a little more on filling out the songs with structure ( ala ‘Clients’ ) insteasd of just trying to create a hurricane of tech style riffage all the time.

I agree, Clients is still the best TRC album to date. Prey for Eyes is my least favorite of them all. But this new album showed and even more aggressive side of TRC and i really love this one.

“Injest the Ash”. “Face Area Solution”. This whole CD is terriffic, “Demoralizer” perfect to fire it up. The track order on this CD was the initial hurdle in my sessions. Then I appreciated each song choosing my own track arrangements

    • I listened to this cd once all the way through, now it’s collecting dust. maybe need to give a second chance but, this album seemed to be generic to me. Also I guess this didn’t get no spins since i got the new Nile and, BTBAM at the same time. Clients is by far their best cd for sure.
